Illinois Aims to Collect August Fuel Tax Revenue
September 21 marks the final day for reporting August fuel tax collections. The state treasurer will receive checks from about 800 distributors, with totals likely over two million dollars. Standard Oil agencies are the largest contributors, possibly exceeding a half million. Many checks say Paid under protest to preserve transmitters’ rights if the law is struck down. The Chicago Motor Coach Company fights the tax’s validity. Attorney General Carlstrom orders the checks paid to the state treasury, noting refunds are hard to obtain unless a court injunction halts transfer within thirty days. He also says cities are not exempt from the gas tax.
