Letter from Captain W M Spurgeon describes surviving a volcanic ash storm that drove a U S transport onto a coral reef. The ship backed off the reef with Liberty ships and LCI’s aid after two days, with minor hull damage and no casualties as chaplains comforted troops aboard.
Students report on classroom decorations and fund totals for stamps and bonds. Seventh and Eighth Grades celebrate a 29 to 7 basketball win at Kinmundy with upcoming game at Young School. Junior and Sophomore activities include radio programs, pep can stand, and Obelisk preparations.
The Willing Workers Class of the Methodist Church will hold a rummage sale in the Bob Eagan building on Saturday November 18. Items include clothing shoes hats dishes and more.
In a wartime presidential race Roosevelt wins a fourth term carrying 35 states for 413 electoral votes and a large popular vote lead. Dewey concedes around 2:15 a.m. amid Democratic gains in the House and Senate. Illinois returns show Green narrowing the race as Lucas defeats Lyons. Taft Douglas wins in the statewide contest. Local races favor Republicans with Crain and Hanna leading in key county offices while Rippy and Rippys rivalry sway Circuit Clerk votes. Patoka and Vernon precincts vote solidly Republican.
Readers are asked to assemble small care packages valued at about 25 cents for wounded soldiers. Packages will be sent to Scott Field for prizes and gifts at the hospital. Desired items include soap, puzzles, games, toothpaste, shaving cream, towels, candy, cookies, fruit cake, writing paper, stamps, and more.
The LeRue Beauty Shop will be closed all day Saturday November 11 due to Armistice Day.
The Patoka War Fund Drive in Precinct No. 1 surpassed its $900 quota, reaching $961 with pledges to exceed $1,000. Gifts ranged from 25 cents to $20, with high school and grade school students contributing $108.12 and Felmont Corporation employees subscribing fully. Ballance thanks solicitors Wilbur McElainter, Sam Pugh, John Jennings, Phillip Mojonnier, Claude Edmerson, Evelena Garrett, Ruth Willett, and Margaret Cox. funds handled by L E Green at Patoka First State Bank.
The Patoka group's November gathering will be held at the high school gym on Saturday afternoon November 11. The program, run by the music and art committee, includes a war song origin roll call, a story of Rock of Ages, and Bless Be The Tie That Binds. A Negro Spirituals quartet, Dorothy Lake piano solo, Ruth Willett talk on religious paintings, Miss Barr Life of Living Poets, and Mrs. Phillips Solo Beyond The Sunset are planned. Members are asked to bring plate, cup, spoon and fork.
Island Chapel last Saturday night raised 118.36 from a pie supper and sent the funds to the War Fund with half for Clinton County and half for Fayette County. E. L. Sharp served as Clinton County solicitor and Mary Merriman as Fayette County solicitor. Mrs. John Evans Jr. received a telephone update about her husband’s return from Europe. Notice of a chili supper at the Legion Hall in Patoka Friday evening November 10 1944. Serving starts at 5 00 p m and an Armistice Program follows the 10 p m basketball game. Everyone is invited.
Marion County Red Cross outlines faster prisoner of war mail through the International Red Cross in Switzerland. Letters must identify the prisoner and be sent to Geneva care of the International Red Cross Directory Service. Packages require a permanent location notice and bi monthly mailing labels from the Provost Marshal. The report also covers cookie drives and holiday needs for hospitalized boys, plus training for Miss K Virginia Seidel in Washington for hospital recreation work.
Charles M. Barnes returned from North Africa for a 30 day leave with his parents. Various relatives and friends note visits, trains, and travel as soldiers and dependents move between home and military posts including Camp Polk Camp Gruver Carbondale and Vernon. Detals include APO addresses future moves and medical or sanatorium care.
A pie supper and cake walk will be held at Mound Chapel School on Friday November 17. Everyone is invited and asked to bring pies and cakes. Sponsored by the P.T.A.
