The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle stars Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in a musical biopic praised as a standout of recent years. The Salem theatre shows the film Sunday and Monday, with Edna May Oliver and Walter Brennan among the cast.

Three youths from Cisco Illinois were caught by S. E. Altom Wednesday evening while burglarizing his store. Altom found the trio behind the counter and forced them to surrender loot totaling about twenty dollars in candy cigarettes cough drops a watch pocket knives and other small items. The boys ages thirteen twelve and younger were taken to Salem and jailed with mayor Beery and city marshal Grupp lodging them at the county jail while authorities decide on action with the state attorney contacting their parents.
Chas Hill installed a new white enamel meat refrigerator with black trim at his Hill Store earlier this week. Manufactured by the Tyler Co, the unit will allow a larger and more varied meat selection for customers.
Old Barney, a faithful Patoka Elevator horse, celebrated his fortieth birthday this week and posed for a Prairie Farmer image. He has hauled coal since before World War I and remains in good condition under manager Geo J Wasem. The exact age is unknown, with a cash prize offered for verification.
The Kaskaskia Association gathered with Patoka Baptist Church for an all day meeting led by Mrs. J. L. Hill. Elder J. L. Hill preached the missionary sermon as members heard reports on G. A. R. A. Y. W. A. and Business Women’s Camps for Ewing this summer.
Marion County farmers have signed farm plans boosting participation in the 1939 AAA program to 2145, about 52 percent of all county farmers. Benefits include 15 cents per bushel on corn, 28 cents on wheat, 85 cents per acre on general crops, plus payments for four soil building practices. Farmers who did not sign by May 1 lose price adjustment and conservation payments.
The Federal Writers Project notes scenic bluffs along the Illinois River in Scott County. The 25 mile stretch rises 100 to 200 feet, features sand crests called Jooses, and dates back at least seven million years. Native burial grounds yielded stone tools and artifacts.
Former Patoka resident Neil Davidson died April 25 1939 at his Salem home after months of illness He served in WWI and was a longtime Standard Oil salesman He was a charter member of the local Legion and MasonIC order and is survived by his wife Lulu five sisters and a brother Funeral services were held April 27 at the Presbyterian Church with military honors.
State traffic engineers determine the maximum safe night speed at 38 mph for average cars based on brake and headlight tests. Allow two seconds to perceive dark objects and one second to brake. Most drivers travel 40 to 50 mph after dark. only 4 percent exceed 60 mph.
