Infant Dies And Young Mother Burned In Fire

In Alma Colorado on March 1 a 4 month old baby died from burns when a fire destroyed the Ververs home. The baby's mother Helen Ververs aged 18 suffered fatal burns and was carried from the house as neighbors fought to rescue both. Edgar M Ververs, the husband, worked at the South London mine and returned to find his home in ruins. The blaze started when kerosene ignited and sprayed flames on Mrs Ververs as she fled. Firefighters from Fairplay aided Alma volunteers in cold weather to prevent spread.

Girl 11 Fatally Wounded in Foster Farm Accident

Funeral services were held for Cora Maxine Shaw 11 daughter of Mr and Mrs Cecil Shaw of Foster township who was killed by a shotgun blast Wednesday afternoon She and four companions were playing in a Griffin farm barn after school when Raymond Griffin 5 allegedly discharged a loaded gun in the loft The coroner ruled death accidental and a coroner s jury returned the verdict.

Four to Be Elected on Village Board Election

The village will vote Tuesday April 18 to elect four members to the town board. Incumbents L. E. Green and B. N. Griffin seek re election joined by Les Ballance and P. J. Mojonnier. No vacancies remain after C. M. Rogier resigned to move to Salem and D. W. Troyer died.

Patoka township voters will decide a liquor prohibition in the April 4 election except for the Patoka village limits where a prior dry vote stands. The Broadcaster at Sandoval High School reports Martha Scott, a long time resident and fourth year student at Sandoval High, earned a Good Citizenship Medal for scholarship, morals, dependability, service, leadership, and respect for authority. Her name may be drawn in Springfield for a free trip to Washington, D C.

Hopkinses Add Modern Dairy Improvements to Farm

Mr and Mrs Orville Hopkins who recently bought the James Thompson farm east of town are making upgrades to fit a modern dairy operation. Dry Leaders Demand County Taverns Closed

A 40 member committee including ministers from Salem Centralia and Batoka and W C T U members went to the county board in Salem to demand closing 12 county taverns and dance halls by July 1. Rev John Rupert said the probe found late hours and liquor sales to minors, pledging continued action until all county taverns outside cities are shut. The W C T U reports growth from six to eight unions and 106 members.
