Oil strikes town as well is drilled in city limits

In a remarkable event for Patoka, Illinois, an oil well was drilled within the town's corporate area. After dredging a nearby junk site as a productive drill yard, the well flowed on June 22 and was later shot with nitroglycerine on a Wednesday, signaling a new era for the village’s oil development.

Patoka Oil Well Produces In Town Sand

The Claude Adams well in Patoka struck oil sand at 1444 feet after a delay from a baler line. Cecil Griffin drilled half the well while Max Conrey, son‑in‑law of local residents, and Cypress Oil & Gas Co officials led the project. A steam rotary rig worked about 1000 feet west of the Register office, marking the seventh well within city limits and the second to produce.

After delays drilling continues on the Vernon DuCord structure with the depth approaching 1400 feet. Benoist sand may be struck at a shallower depth than at the field’s far end.

Oil Field Prosperity Boosts Patoka Town Hopes

Oil has risen just above the mast and heavier flows mark the Patoka field. Storage tanks are in place and the well is set for pumping. Royalty income promises funds for waterworks sewerage light plant and fire protection as the town plans further oil drilling on leased blocks near cemetery tract and school house.

Perrine Well Reaches 300 Feet Near Town

The W. L. Perrine well on the town's east side reached about 300 feet in depth on Wednesday afternoon after several days of drilling.

New Grain Combine Arrives in Southern Illinois

Robert Bales of the Mueller farm northwest of town has bought a McCormick grain combine. The machine can cut and harvest 30 acres a day and is the first of its kind in this part of southern Illinois, able to handle wheat or oats efficiently and economically.

Obituary of Mrs Augusta Nichols

Mrs Augusta Nichols born September 21 1857 in Marion County died June 20 1937 aged 79 years 8 months 29 days. She married Rufus Nichols November 16 1876 and had nine children. Surviving are two daughters Sadie Nattier Delphia Jolliff two sons Cyrus and Gerald eleven grandchildren one great grandchild one brother Newton Meador and many nieces nephews and friends. Funeral services were held June 22 at 10:90 at the M E Church South with Rev R E Willis officiating. burial in Meador Cemetery.

Drilling at 1300 Feet On Altom Lease Progressing

Altom Well Drilling at 1300 ft depth Wednesday on the Thos. Altom lease within city limits. Krum and Frederick drilling the Coleman and Blosser well aim to set casing at 1400 ft once reached and expect completion by Sunday. Mr. Krum plans another rig on the Patoka field next week.

Mrs. Mildred Behrendt and Mrs. Edna Simpson of Bloomington visited Patoka with their niece Jane Limber to help celebrate the seventy six birthday of their father and grandfather A. M. Peek. He is noted as an active Patoka citizen and community enthusiast.

Bachman Well Reaches 1000 Feet In Patoka Field

Brown and Ball contractors drilled the Bachman lease to about 1000 feet on Wednesday. They planned to use underdiggers instead of under-reamers to prepare the hole before running pipe, a novel method drawing interest in the Patoka field.

Women plan extended Western States tour

Mrs. E. L. Hamilton of Decatur and Mrs. F. W. Pugh of Vandalia depart June 19 for a long visit with Mrs. Steven Bratcher in Pomeroy Washington. They travel by Union Pacific route via Salt Lake City Los Angeles San Francisco Portland Seattle and Spokane visiting Los Angeles and San Francisco to view the new San Francisco Oakland bridge. They return in September by the Milwaukee Road from Spokane to Chicago.

Adams Oil and Gas reaches twelve wells in Illinois

Adams Oil and Gas increased its active wells to a dozen after Taylor's Drilling Co moved its rotary rig to Pats Ainscough acreage south of the Davidson farm. The Patoka field operator has eight additional producers and two more wells on the Meryman farm with others on the Davidson and Sam Pugh farms. Jake Has leads the Illinois development program with steady progress.

10 Inch Pipe Set In Carroll Well at 800 Feet

Beaton and Ryer drilled their Pope township lease well on the Carroll farm west of town to 800 feet and cased with 10 inch pipe. Operations paused briefly due to river bottom reeds hindering pipe and coal hauling. Linville, a veteran driller, leads the development effort in Fayette County.

Hempen and Burgess drilled the Harold Jolliff well for A J Hansman of Vandalia and others to the cap rock above the Benoist pay sand and were underreaming 80 feet of rock Wednesday afternoon with plans to finish Thursday. Casing will be set on the cap rock and then the pipe running the well into the sand.

Fishing Job At Allison Lease Progress Report

Ray and Evans work on the Allison lease south of town for several days. Two sets of underseamen lug tools and a pipe section lay in the hole with part of the iron recovered Wednesday afternoon. The well advances toward the Benoist sand after about 20 more feet of drilling.

Sunflower Well Remains Uncompleted After Shut Down

Sunday marked two months of shutdown on the W. W. Murfin location after a fishing job. Reports vary on future operations with no definite information by Wednesday. The well depth before the shutdown was about 1060 feet.

Logan Well Start Ed Last Week

The H. L. Logan well begun recently was drilled to a depth of about 12 feet. A test of the lime rock correction will be made with a portable rotary machine on the formation, and if results are favorable, completion of the well on the lease would be desirable.
