Vernon notices list numerous relatives and friends visiting Decatur for the funeral of Mrs Effie Arnold. The article also reports weddings trips relocations and social visits including Army service leave and local family events. Names span Indiana Illinois and Michigan locations with several aunts uncles and cousins mentioned.
Cemetery Committee calls volunteers to the old churchyard corner on Saturday morning June 21 to clean and prepare for the Ice Cream Supper. A person with a truck is needed to assist with setup.
The L L L Class of the Baptist Church met in the south room Tuesday night June 17. After singing the class song a business session was held. Plans were discussed for a potluck meeting in the near future. REMEMBER the date July 15 at Mrs. Bessie Murray home with Mrs. Harry Perkins devotional leader.
Mrs Ruth Basola widow of Nick Basola killed in the Centralia mine disaster is shown with her five children in a group photo set to be printed in magazines and posters for John L Lewis safety campaign. The image already appeared on the UMW Journal front page and in a booklet with Lewis testimony on mine safety. The Basola children are Barbara eight Ruth Ann six Joe five Louis three and Donna six months.
Pastor W M Reisner leads the Patoka Methodist Church with a 9 30 a m Sunday School and 10 45 a m Morning Worship. Evening services at 6 45 p m Youth Fellowship 7 30 p m Evangelistic Service. Wednesday 7 30 p m Monthly Fellowship supper in the church basement. Thursday 7 30 p m Mid Week Service led by F B Ballance. Last Sunday the SS Superintendent presented gifts to the eldest father Anson Griffin youngest father Darvin Jones father with most children Elza Sharp newly married couples Mr and Mrs Floyd Self and Mr and Mrs George Dean Crawford and a prospect Wes Griffin.
Legislative report notes Congressional reapportionment bill Senate Bill No. 57, backed by State administration and Chicago groups, advances to passage after a 35 to 9 Senate vote. It creates thirteen districts for downstate Illinois and thirteen for Cook and Lake counties, abolishes the at large seat, and reorganizes four downstate districts into two. The final vote targets next Tuesday with a 77-vote requirement.
The Outdoor 4-Hers held their second meeting on Wednesday June 11 at the Park with thirteen members present. They planned each girl earning one dollar before the next meeting on June 25 to fund foods for summer demonstrations and asked for job leads. Younger members will babysit mow lawns wash dishes and run errands while older girls will do housework care for the sick waitress or sew. The Save and Sew Club meets every other Wednesday at the Legion Hall.
Mr and Mrs Dean Edwards of Patoka announce the engagement of their daughter Helen to Carl Adams son of Mr and Mrs F E Adams of Patoka.
Victoria Chapter O.E.S. will hold initiation ceremonies Monday evening June 23 at 8 o'clock. Members are invited to attend. Eunice Rogier, Worthy Matron.
Mound Chapel will hold Sunday School on June 22 at 10 o clock with preaching at 11 by Rev. Ivert Goodall.
The U of Illinois Cooperative Extension Center will be held again at Salem High School from September through the school year. Interested students should register June 23 to 27 at the high school office. Minimum 50 registrations required to maintain the center. Fees: $10 registration and library, plus $5 per semester hour. Textbooks distributed via the high school office. Hours 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm. Do not come Saturday.
Treasurer H B Gerrish reports donations to Harrison Cemetery. Donors include Henry Stillabar Peggie Tune Fred Tacke Levi Gerrish Frank Williams Blanche JoMP Russell Snyder Burl Alexander John Belcher Eldoris Belcher each contributing amounts ranging from one to two dollars.
The Patoka Panthers met at Sammy Meador's home on Monday June 7 with eighteen members present. They praised the record as unmatched by any other club in the country and planned a home tour to view members' projects.
A Monday morning fire at the Patoka Light Plant caused about $50 in damage. Firemen found oily rags near oil tanks at 8 a.m. and quickly contained the blaze with only slight damage to the building.
Mr A L Irvin was surprised Sunday as his daughters and families arrived with baskets to celebrate Fathers Day. A fried chicken dinner with strawberries angel food cake and trim mings was enjoyed and gifts were given. Present were Mr and Mrs J B Ballance Mr and Mrs A D Nichols Mrs Lucille Headley Mr and Mrs John Chance and Mr and Mrs Roy Doolen.
The Vernon Good Will Club held its regular gathering at Tonie Sorrell’s home on Wednesday afternoon June 11. Members cut and pieced two quilts and discussed not repeating “A Trip Around The World” soon. Special guest Mrs. Klee Mann attended. Bible verses began with OC. Refreshments were served by the hostess with Doris Kleeman assisting. The club noted Nellie Doolen’s illness and hospital rush, and donations for the cemetery fund from several members totaled multiple dollars.
The Foster township Sunday School convention, an annual event for over fifty years, will be held at Arnold Chapel Methodist Church six miles east of Vernon on a gravel road. The program includes good speaking and singing. Addis Walton is president, Marvin Ehrat asst.
June 17 1947 Patoka Lions Club meeting heard Mr Jhon L Kagy Salem outline steps for a proposed community four year high school. Five polling places and carpooling were organized to aid voters on June 28, urging residents with six mile radius to vote for the project to protect local tax base and school valuation.
The Chance family expresses gratitude to friends and neighbors for help in putting in their crop. They pray for God’s blessing on each helper and cite a Bible verse.
Ice Cream Supper invites a large turnout two miles west of Patoka. Ongoing travels note James O Neal's move to Chicago for work and Darrell Walker returning from Montana to start a job near Albion. Multiple visits and travels involve residents from Salem Vernon Springfield Mattoon Vandalia Charleston and Boulder with illnesses and hospitalizations, weddings and funerals, and local social events through mid June.
