A Friday luncheon for the Birthday Club at Mrs. Delpha Joliff’s home featured co host Mrs. X B Holland. Guests at twelve fifteen used place cards that doubled as favors and June romance contests awarded prizes to Mrs. Ralph Elliott of Peoria and Mrs. Austin Good. Absent were Mrs. A R Hanper and Mrs. Jess Belcher. The item also notes church youth group attendance, theater party for Judy Easley’s sixteenth birthday, visits from relatives and friends, and local club gatherings.

Patoka Little League Falls to Centralia Elks 13 2

Centralia Elks Club defeated Patoka Little League 13 to 2 at Patoka City Park on Wednesday evening June 15. It was Patoka’s season opener after a rainout on Sunday afternoon. Centralia scored six runs in the first inning, five in the fifth and two in the sixth. Patoka tallied two in the fourth. Harris pitched for Centralia and Rutledge for Patoka.

Loyal Leaders Class Entertained by Christian Church Ladies

Mrs. Raymond Britt and Mrs. Leo Walker Jr hosted the Loyal Leaders Class on Tuesday evening June 14 at the Christian Church. Jehovahs Witnesses to Attend Chicago Assembly at Comiskey Park

Delegates from the Patoka Congregation will attend a Jehovahs Witnesses assembly at Comiskey Park Chicago from June 22 to 26. A D Nichols presiding minister heads the delegation describing the event as part of a world sweeping series of eleven Christian Conventions. In 1935 an international gathering at Yankee Stadium drew 165,829 from 97 lands. organizers hope to double attendance this year.

Secretary of State to Maintain HQ at Salem Reunion

Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier said his office will run a service headquarters at the Soldiers and Sailors Reunion in Salem on June 22 and 23. Team from his office will assist with motor vehicle license and driver license applications and answer questions about the office.

Death notice for Edward H. Thalman of Riverside California

Relatives report the death of Edward H. Thalman on June 12 at Riverside Community Hospital after six weeks of illness. A former Patoka resident and grocer, he owned the Patoka store later Martin’s IGA, moved to California, and was active in the Riverside Christian Church. He is survived by a granddaughter Donna a great granddaughter and a great great grandson all in California a brother Oscar Thalman of Centralia three sisters in St Louis and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at the Riverside Christian Church with burial there.

Mrs Anna Ballance Recovering From Heart Attack

Mrs Anna L Ballance has returned to the Towler home in Shobonier from Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia after a heart attack Friday. She is recovering satisfactorily and hopes to go to her Kinmundy home next week. Mrs Eva Ballance and Mrs Addis Walton with Kenneth Walton visited Wednesday.

Wheat price support set at 1.81 with quotas vote

The 1956 minimum wheat price support is set at $1.81 a bushel national average, to take effect in commercial wheat states if farmers approve marketing quotas in the June 25 referendum. The rate, about 76 percent of parity, can rise if July parity and supply conditions warrant, and penalties apply for over-quota production. If quotas fail, price support drops to about $1.19 and non-quota farmers lose eligibility.
