County Voters Defeat Fair Tax Levy In Local Vote

Marion county voters rejected the county fair tax by about ten to one. Unofficial results show circuit judge winners Franklin R. Dove Ward P Holt and Dan Dailey securing six year or first terms, while Republican A Leonard Anderson trailed. County totals show Hill Dove Dailey and Anderson with respective vote counts.

Vernon to Start 1 Percent Sales Tax July First

Vernon will implement a 1 percent sales tax on July 1 as part of a statewide policy allowing villages to raise additional revenue. The Willing Neighbors club met in May at Ann Britt's home. A meal was served, a prayer opened the business session, new and old business discussed, and members visited afterwards. Hostess gifts were given to Ann. next meeting planned at Amanda Thalman's home with Pauline Rodenberg and children as guests.

Public Library Reopens Saturday in New Quarters

The public library will reopen this Saturday afternoon in its new quarters after a closure for moving and cleaning. Mrs. Elsie Gray, the librarian, says regular Friday and Saturday hours start next week and adds new books have been added with more on the way to attract patrons.

Special Election Planned for J Ps and Constables

A vacancy for two justices of peace and a constable in Patoka township arose after law deadlines. Caucuses by Democrats and Republicans will be held at Patoka Village Hall on June 15 with times 3 p.m. and 1 p.m. The date of the special election will be set after caucus results.

Oil Discoveries in Devonian Lime at Patoka Field

Trenton continues oil development in the Patoka area with a new well reporting Devonian saturation in the southwest extension of the Patoka field. The Devonian lime, at about 2900 feet, remains undeveloped while Rosiclare sandstone and deep Trenton limestone production continue, with no further Devonian activity planned.

Vernon Illinois ordinance imposes retail sales tax

Ordinance No 100 levies a tax of percent of one percent on tangible personal property sales in Vernon. It sets July 1 1957 as the effective date and requires publication within ten days and mailing a certified copy to the Illinois Department of Revenue within five days. Passed June 4 1957.
