Donna Linton daughter of Mr and Mrs Winess Linton of Vernon and Lewis Bates Jr son of Mr and Mrs L J Bates of Vernon were married at the Baptist parsonage in Patoka Sunday May 23 in a double ring ceremony officiated by Rev McHaney. Bates attended Vernon Patoka and Sandoval high schools, served in the Armed Forces, and will farm with his father while the couple establishes a home.
The Save & Sews Club met June 2 with 12 members and one visitor. Darlene Wortman and Marie Crawford demonstrated flower arrangements, Wilma Pugh spoke on seams, and Betty and Marilyn Ballance showed fitting a pattern. The next sewing meeting is June 16. some older girls will help at the Ice Cream Supper June 19 at Walkers.
I thank neighbors and friends who helped at the death and burial of my mother Mrs Annie Lester and appreciate the words and sympathy cards received.
Rev. M. W. Friesner attended the Annual Conference at Murphysboro last week and returned to his charge at Patoka. He enters his fourth year with enthusiastic zeal for the good of his people.
Annie M. Lester born May 7 1871 in Kaskaskia Township died May 22 1948 in Vernon Illinois at age 77. She married Percy E. Lester June 25 1893. he died January 2 1935. Survived by two daughters Mrs Albert Shobonier and Mrs Charles Epps, a foster son William W. Thomas, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, a brother Harry Lawrence of Decatur Illinois, and other relatives. Funeral and visitation details follow local church affiliations and current travelers visiting relatives.
A reunion of the Patoka group once called the old bunch was held on May 29 at Richeson’s Cafe. Attendees shared memories, visited homes of members’ families, and elected Binnie Humes as President Letty Thulman as Secretary Treasurer. A plan to meet again around Decoration was set with Flossie Livesay Fletcher hosting in Mt Zion.
Miss Mildred Morgan of Greene City Missouri and Beryle Arnold son of Mr and Mrs Hobart Arnold of Alma were married at Springfield Illinois Friday May 28 There will be a charivari for the couple at the Arnold home in Alma Saturday night June 5.
A food sale is planned for Saturday June 5 beginning at 10 00 a m at Patoka Hardware and Locker Service featuring dressed chickens pies cakes and other foods. Several local residents are mentioned visiting relatives and attending graduations in Charleston Ottawa and Chicago.
Miss Vera France of Peoria becomes Mrs Carl Schaffnit son of W F Schaffnit of Sandoval at 8 pm May 30 1948 in Bloomington Illinois. Rev Robert Nolte officiated. Attendants were Burl Alexander and Mrs Alexander. A wedding supper followed then couple to reside in Pekin Illinois.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Walker announce a son Stephen Eugene born Friday May 28 1948 at Mark Greer hospital Vandalia weighing 7 lb 14 oz Grandparents Mrs Cleo Walker Patoka and Mr and Mrs August Ververs Sandoval Mr and Mrs Wesley Simer announce a daughter Belinda Lucille born May 28 at St Marys hospital East St Louis weighing 6 lb 6 oz Formerly Genevieve Barnes Mrs Simer Belinda Lucille is her name Mr and Mrs Maurice Lee Cox of Denver Colorado announce a son Steven Maurice born Wednesday June 2 weighing 7 lb 13 oz Grandparents Mr and Mrs Harlan Goff and Mr and Mrs T T Cox Patoka
The Patoka Woman’s Club Literature and Art Department will present a program at the gymnasium on June 12 at 2 p.m. Activities include Roll What I Like To Read, a duet by Rev and Mrs M W Friesner, piano solo by Darlene Wortman, readings by Mrs Agnes Cox, and a talk Literature in the Home by Rev Friesner. Please bring dinner plate glass and spoon.
Clifford Christian and his wife have purchased the J. W. Alexander residence at the west city limits. They plan to build a modern brick house on the Old Alexander lots just north of the Baptist Church. The Alexanders sold and will move from Oklahoma.

St. Louis residents Mr. and Mrs. Willard Siegal visited Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Ketchner on Sunday. Also noted were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Parks of Dundee Michigan and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Stephens of Effingham. Miss Mary Ellen Willis of Greenville stayed with the J. W. Alexander home. Memorial Day guests included Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Adams and son Benny of Decatur visiting Charles Adams. Father’s Day gifts featured at Cox Appliance Store.
Mr and Mrs Will Chilton and Mr and Mrs Dwight Chilton and Mr and Mrs Fred Kennedy of Decatur were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs J W Alexander and Jimmie on Decoration Day.
A local committee thanks volunteers and supporters for making the Bear Creek Cemetery Ice Cream Supper a success. The message expresses gratitude to everyone who assisted in any way with the event.
