Sue Cox was named Patoka FFA Chapter Sweetheart for the year at the annual Valentine party held Friday night February 8. Neil Joliff presented the white rayon Sweetheart Jacket as refreshments of rice cream cake punch and candy were served in the Agriculture room.
The February meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service at the Methodist church featured the playlette Whom Shall I Send along with a lesson by Mrs. J W Alexander on Isa 6 1 8 stressing need for qualified young people in Christian service. Mesdames Bila Nattier Donna Jennings Anna Holland and Clarice Hollis performed with Miss Hollis singing and Vivian Layton at the piano. Mrs Oscar Hill led the business session announcing a February 27 gathering at 1 30 pm with guest speaker Mrs Maude Bristol of Harrisburg district and refreshments to follow. A new member Mrs E E Lynn was welcomed. The social hour offered pink ice tea heart shaped cookies coffee candy trees and valentines themed decorations hosted by Mesdames Lora Altom Selah Ballace Mildred Belcher and Phoebe Carter.
Mrs. Anna Mae Pugh 73 died at her Patoka home Sunday at 7 30 a m funeral held Tuesday at 1 30 p m from the Christian Church Rev Grant Hawkins officiated burial was in Patoka cemetery She was born in Patoka daughter of William and Caroline Himes married to Raymond Gray then Jeff Pugh survived by two sons Harold Decatur Darrell East St Louis three daughters Evelyn Ballance Alta Liogan Reba Gray Vandalia four grandchildren one great grandchild
Victoria Chapter of Eastern Star held initiation for Mrs. Ernest Bozarth at its Feb 11 meeting with guests from Sandoval and Centralia. Reports noted illnesses of Florence Simcox Inez Wheeler Burl Alexander Jack and Jerry Gerris. Next meeting Feb 25 will honor Past Worthy Matrons and Patrons. Refreshments followed in the decorated dining room with St Valentine themes.
The Robinson Family expresses gratitude for acts of kindness and sympathy during their father's death and for all who assisted. The Warriors won 30-29 over Breese as Dale Rutledge hit a last 20 second basket. Rutledge scored seven points and Robinson matched him, boosting the Warriors to a 13-4 season mark while Belcher remained out and Muffin filled in.
Mrs Fern Sass county chairman for the Heart Association spoke at the American Legion Auxiliary meeting on Thursday Feb 7 at the Leviton home. She appointed Auxiliary girls to manage Heart Fund banks to be distributed to business places this week.
Ida Pegues marked her 91st birthday with a quiet celebration at the home of Jack and Mrs Matchett. She received many camels and flowers, and a telegram from her daughter and son-in-law James and wife noting they recently moved to Gainesville Florida.
Sunbeam groups plan a 1 p.m. gathering at the Baptist church this Saturday. The pre school program includes salutes to faith and Bible verses, a prayer, an acrostic on F A T H E R, a mission story, a closing prayer, games, and refreshments led by Mrs Gerrish and Mrs Miojoniner.
A Democratic caucus and a Republican caucus will be held at Pome Township Town Halls on Tuesday February 19 from 1 to 2 a m and 2 to 3 p m for nominating candidates for Assessor Town Clerk Justice of the Peace and two Constables John F Anderson listed as Town Clerk among the nominees.
Vernon Church groups discussed raising funds for the Wesley Foundation Building Crusade at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. A student speaker from the university may be invited soon to help secure pledges for any amount.

The Good Will Club met on Thursday, February 7, with Alice Wilson as hostess. Eight members and three visitors attended. The group sewed a quilt for Tina, then shared a luncheon. A short business meeting followed and a White Elephant sale was planned. Prizes went to Emma, Ferne, Tonie, and Mary. Next meeting will be with Ada Bates on February 21.
Monday to Friday menus list Italian spaghetti, ham, chili, hamburger, and luncheon meat dishes with sides. Each day includes bread or rolls, butter, milk, fruit, and a dessert such as cookie or cake. Special items include bread pudding with nutmeg sauce and potato salad.
The Ideal Class of the Baptist Church met at the church. Alvin Perkins gave devotions and Darrell Atchison led a short business session. Marilyn Perkins led contests. The next meeting will be with Mr and Mrs Darrell Atchison.

Senator Friedrich notes January focused on organizing the General Assembly and appointing committees. More than 500 bills are in preparation, with over 2300 introduced in the 69th General Assembly and projections above 2500 this session. Deficiency appropriations dominate early actions, including 30.15 million dollars for the Illinois Public Aid Commission and 400 thousand for Southern Illinois University to cover extra students.
At the Sando Theatre this Friday and Saturday February 14 and 15 the program features He Tanehs Last with Frenkin Taineen Lucy Marlow and Animal Word. Sunday February 17 Dakota Incident stars Dale Robertson and Linda Darnell. Monday February 18 Annie Get Your Gun stars Betty Hutton Howard Kell Keenan Wynn.

Virgil Arliss Wortman of Champaign Illinois son of Mr and Mrs Beryl Wortman of Midland Texas has completed work at the University of Illinois for a midyear bachelor of science degree He is now employed as a civil engineer by the Illinois Division of Highways The Wortmans and Virgil are former Patoka residents who lived there 14 years before moving to Midland in February 1954
Miss Marie Williams daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Williams married Charles Nattier son of Mr and Mrs M M Nattier in Villa Grove Illinois on February 9 at the home of Bro and Mrs Tom McGee. The double ring ceremony was performed by McGee with attendance by the bride’s aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Kenneth Tune and Mr and Mrs M M Nattier and son Don and Frank Williams. A reception will be held at the couple’s newly furnished home east of Patoka on February 16, public invited.
A Chicken Supper will be held at the American Legion home on Saturday March 2. The price is $1.00 per person and serving begins at 5 p m. Rev Glendale Davis of Mt Vernon is evangelist and the event is open to all. Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
