A narrator recalls Patoka oil drilling near the town limits and the excitement, rumors of a 2000 barrel well, and media misfires. He contrasts Hollywood geysers with quiet wells, jokes about Uranium finds, and ponders the elusive truth behind oil wealth.
Thieves broke into Jackson's Zephyr Service north of town Monday night after closing and took about $150 in merchandise and a Zenith radio. Everett Jackson, the station manager, says the loot included motor oil cigarettes cigars and candy. No arrests have been made.
The Pre-School Sunbeam group held a Valentine party Saturday afternoon February 4 at the Baptist church. School age guests hid hearts for the youngsters to find while Mrs. Claude Gerrish organized refreshments with help from older girls. The decor featured a red and white Valentine motif with red nut cups and candy, cookies, and chocolate. Mrs. E. M. Outhouse will host the nibble nook February 18 as the roll call will include a father and the lesson centers on George Washington.
Conservation Club 100 will meet at the high school Monday February 13 at 7 p m to hold their annual meeting and elect officers for the year. Elected positions include president secretary treasurer and two directors. Jim Weinsman president asks all members who can be present.
A two week revival begins February 12 at the First Baptist Church here with Rev. T. H. King from West Frankfort as evangelist and Mrs. H. S. Cottingham of Sayem leading the singing. The church invites the public, with nursery provided and services at 7 30 each night.
The Good Will Club met February 1 at Anna Lee De Pew’s home with ten members and five visitors. Members picked walnuts and socialized, then shared a pot luck lunch. Emma filled in for the absent secretary. Prizes were awarded to Letta, Alice, Marguerite and Dora. They adjourned early due to a slippery road and planned to meet February 15 with Alice Wilson.
Mrs. Anna Davidson former Patoka resident and Fayette County hospital patient at Vandalia turned 90 on Monday. O J Hill brought an angel food cake while W A Deemes and his wife had a cake made by the hospital staff. Mr Deemes Mr and Mrs Hill and the nurses gathered in her room to share the cakes and she received many birthday cards.
The menu lists meals for Monday to Friday with items such as meat loaf, lima beans, hamburgers, chili, and chicken pie. Each day includes sides, a dessert, bread or milk, and a fruit option.

James Thomas and sons and several local families attended an R A meeting in Sando val Friday night where Ronnie Gerrish was elected president of the 29 church association. Mrs X B Holland attended the Centralia Woman's Club meeting and Louie Soutier took over Foltz Hardware after selling his east Patoka farm assets.
Sam Jolliff of the village water department reports the reservoir north of town is completely full for the first time since last spring. The reservoir holds about 4 million gallons, and pumping to it depends on the creek level reaching a required threshold.
Sixty seven first graders and older students take tuberculosis tests on February six. FFA members publish Vo Agri News and Views with articles by Falkenhain. Sweetheart party set for February ten and Warrior staff races to meet February twentieth deadline. Milk program reports January usage of eleven thousand three hundred four half pints with four cents reimbursement per half pint.
Thirty-one folk and Square dance teams along with 19 square dance callers competed in the first 1956 Illinois Farm Sports Festival during Farm and Home Week at the University of Illinois.
Vernon officials outlined Illinois Bell survey plans and possible takeover of Vernon and Shobonier lines. Patoka central office urged by Bell. A. D. Nichols cited $5,000 needed for rural lines. Wes Griffin announced Carlyle Lake fundraising and Patoka quota of $400.
A Sunday birthday dinner at Henry Meredith home honored Henry Meredith Elizabeth Webking and Walter Webking. Neighbors and relatives attended including James Hide Charles Melton Clarence Albert family and more. Funeral attendance for Alex Anderson noted with relatives from Michigan and Carbondale. Community activities include Ladies Aid quilting P T A meeting and local visits. A few illnesses and injuries reported along with school closing for teachers meeting. Nearby residents plan wood gathering and hay transport for amid seasonal work.
The Kaskaskia Valley Association launched a fundraising drive to support Carlyle lake project and flood control on the Kaskaskia River. Centrailia leaders Robert Ray and Paul Allen hosted a dinner at Allen's Lake Centralia clubhouse with representatives from Greenville Keyesport Carlyle New communities.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service at the Methodist Church heard Mrs John Jennings discuss the book Within Two Worlds by Dr David M Cory about Indian Americans. Speakers reviewed early Indian leaders and missionary work.

The Patoka Baptist Church J O Y class gathered at Lola Mae Mojonnier’s home on January 26 with Pearl Britt as co host. Leader Loretta Genre opened the session and Gladys Nattier gave a devotional titled Parking on Another’s Nickel. A Carmi Orphanage shower was planned and nursery purchases plus a visitation program were set as next month’s projects.
The Patoka Home Bureau unit will hold its regular monthly meeting Friday February 17 at 2 pm in the Methodist church basement. Marie Brite will teach a lesson on furniture style use and comfort. A nut bread mixing minor lesson will be given by Mrs. Wm Cox and Mrs. S M Spurgeon. Roll call will be etiquette. Hostesses are Mrs. Bruce Pugh and Mrs. Elmer Rogier.
Final figures show the Lions Club collected 500.12 for the March of Dimes. Les Griffin and Mark Cox served as co chairmen with contributions from individual donors a Legion Auxiliary card party basketball game canisters school children and street collections by high school girls.
Second Lt Ira F Watkins of Patoka has entered the B 47 transition phase training at McConnell Air Force Base Wichita Kansas.
Henry Brumfield expresses gratitude for cards visits and hospital and home care. He thanks the Methodist Church for candy cookies and fruit and notes the appreciation for support during illness over past months.
