The Legionnaires lost 71 52 at Ramsey on Friday as Ramsey used its height to lead 26 20 at halftime and 34 30 in the third. John Thull paced Ramsey with 24 points while Larry Green added 21 for the locals. The following night Patoka beat Mt Vernon 74 63 as Nattier 18 and Hathaway 17 led Patoka and Purcell added 24 for the visitors as Mt Vernon pressed throughout.

Patoka Lions Club celebrated its second Charter Night with a lively Ladies Night on Feb 3. The gala featured eight entertaining acts including a baby contest and a comic Battle of the Sexes in Song led by Lion A. W. Whiting, Marcus Cox and Roy Jones with prizes awarded to Mrs Hopkins and Baby Jones. District Governor Lester Jones attended and praised Lionism as a fast growing service organization.

The District Conference for Local 4-H Club Leaders took place February 3 at Centralia Community Center with Marion Clinton Jefferson and Washington counties represented. R A Turner U S C A senior agriculturist chaired the event guiding six discussion groups on youth efforts for home and community improvement. Luncheon funded by Sears Roebuck and Co with Lutheran Church ladies serving. afternoon remarks followed group singing and activities. The Centralia Chamber will host a banquet for outstanding Marion County 4-H members and leaders during 4-H Week in March.

Word came from Oblong Illinois that John Hetzler Sr. of Stoy Illinois died January 20 from severe burns after his clothing caught fire while lighting an oil stove. He lived sixteen hours. No further details were available at press time.

Patoka Woman's Club will hold a February 14 afternoon meeting in the local gymnasium. Mobile X ray Unit to Visit Marion County in March
The Mobile X-Ray Unit from the State Department of Public Health will be in Marion County on March 9 1948 for about two months to scan adults industrial workers and high school age positives. Sponsored by local health and civic groups with staff including Bette Hargis and Mary Vaughan Mercer the unit seeks 25000 x rays this year. Two public meetings are planned February 10 in Salem and February 13 in Centralia to finalize plans with open invitations.

Former Patoka resident Mrs Inez Rodgers Webster, 76, died January 21 at Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston Texas. Born and raised in Patoka she married and later lived in Houston. Burial was in Houston beside her sister Kate. Survived by son Bruce Seguine and daughter Margaret. Husband preceded her in death.

A patent was issued for what may be the world’s largest carnation named Spencer Penrose bred by William A Hoyne of Denver Colorado. The plant features 4 to 5 inch blooms in red pink and white with stems up to 86 inches.
