Latoka hosts a rush of interest as Patoka oil field draws buyers and drillers. Lease prices soar and major firms plan immediate drilling, signaling a coming boom that could transform the small town into an industrial hub and attract long term investment.
Rostra Club held its regular meeting Tuesday night with the secretary in charge. Topics included mispronounced words, India’s religions, and British rule. Readings covered Gandhi, the caste system, suttee, child marriage, and Kipling poems.
Owen Lewis of East St. Lewis attended the funeral of his uncle Seeeeaatta in Washington State, with family and community members paying final respects amid quiet ceremonies.
Wiser Oil Company of Lexington Kentucky establishes offices in the C D Martin building with D L Johnson in charge. The firm plans a drill on a 300 acre tract east of Patoka and may pursue a deep producing well if needed. Landowners include H Hudspeth C D Martin L Werner and Seth Martin. The project interests Patoka residents and local authorities.
Rev J R Kelly and family of Sturgis Kentucky were unharmed after the flood disaster. The Kellys told Mrs P J Mojonnier that Sturgis would need five or six feet more water to damage their property. Their son Henry is engaged in rescue work in the region. Kelly previously preached at Patoka Baptist Church.
Cox and Martin undertakers, operating from Patoka, Vernon and Sandoval, purchase the former H. R. Hall residence in Sandoval to establish a new funeral home. John Chapman of Sandoval will manage the Sandoval office. the business moves from the Willis building.
Mr and Mrs George Jett of Odin celebrated their golden wedding Sunday in the Odin high school gymnasium. About two hundred relatives and friends attended while Rev J M Smith of Patoka spoke on the occasion. Supt Gumm presented two rocking chairs as gifts and a bountiful noon dinner followed.
Mr and Mrs Leo C Walker learn their son Junior, injured in a June motorcycle crash, re broken leg after slipping while walking at Jefferson Barracks Hospital Missouri. He will remain hospitalized for several more months.
Core drilling in the Patoka area used a rotary drill at the Merryman well producing visible cores of strata. Findings include a seven foot coal vein with a hard rock ceiling, indicating a promising site for future coal mining development.

Ska Local of Sanitary Milk held its annual meeting at the gymnasium on January 11 with about 50 visitors present. E. Bone reviewed the year’s work and Jack from St. Louis spoke on the association’s milk ordinance while Mr iid explained by Mr. Hubberd. W J McCoy discussed milk testing and Patoka’s valuable premiums. Directors elected for the year included Roy Malan, Ora Brumfield, and Fred Amittee with Wash Bowen, Claud Foster, Frank Foster, and Robert as committee members.
Regular preaching at 9:30 am and 6:00 pm Feb 7 with Sunday School each week at 10:00 am. Last Sunday attendance 18 with 5 cents collection. First Sunday preaching at 11:00 am by Bro. Maurice Ballance. Superintendent Bro. Joe Muck invites all to attend.
Patoka's oil boom continues as the first storage tank is pumped into the Ohio Pipe Line west of town. Old Faithful still flows, Merryman well output is trimmed, and new tanks, contracts, and leases electrify residents as drills and negotiations spread across Patoka and surrounding areas.

A wire recovered Tuesday morning from Patoka's oil producer area is reported in the local notes. The cartridge was lost after the shot was cleaned and the rig will move to a new location for further operations.
James M. Eaglin born June 8 1855 in Marion Illinois died January 25 at his daughter's home aged 81 years 7 months 17 days He married Anna Quayle August 30 1877 they had four children Mona Williams Lola Marvin Robert Eaglin and George Baclie Ten grandchildren brothers and a sister predeceased him Funeral services were held at the M E Church June 27 officiated by Rev J M Smith with interment at Patek cemetery
