Christmas Eve visits fill Fredonia area with family gatherings

The community reports a busy holiday season with multiple households hosting Christmas Eve and Christmas Day gatherings. Families such as Hyde, Melton, Kile, Perkins, Meredith, Talbert, Jett, and others shared meals, exchanged gifts, and spent time with relatives across towns including Vidalia Mississippi and Marion Illinois. Several relatives traveled from Florida and Michigan, and veterans’ hospital plans were noted.

Binnions Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Robert Binnion mark their 50th wedding anniversary with a family noon dinner and 2 to 4 p.m. open house on Sunday at their Vernon home. The couple wed January 1 1906 in St Louis Missouri, and have since lived near Vernon.

Good Will Club Holds Annual Christmas Party

The Good Will club met with Marguerite Murfin for the Christmas meeting on Thursday December 22. Twelve members and fourteen visitors attended. After a morning of walnut picking and a Lord's prayer a noon meal was served. A short business session planned a miscellaneous shower for the Louis Soutier family at the next meeting. Leta Hopkins led entertainment and the president distributed presents. The next gathering is with Emma Protz on January 4 1956.

P. T. C. to Meet Monday in Grade School Gym

The P. T. C. will hold its regular meeting Monday evening at 7 30 in the Grade School gym. Members are asked to bring sandwiches.

The Methodist Church hosted its annual Christmas program on Wednesday evening December 21. A smoke scare at the Henry Hilliard home near Patoka drew the local fire department Wednesday near noon. Firefighters found the house filled with smoke and only interior damage was reported.

Murfins Injured in Joliet Auto Wreck

Mr and Mrs Donald Murfin and daughter Donna of Vernon were injured in an automobile accident near Joliet Illinois on Monday. Dr Maurice Murfin of Decatur assisted and the family was transported to a Decatur hospital by ambulance.

Forest Cathern Dies on Trip to Son's Home in Denton

Forest Cathern 52 died Sunday December 25 at his son Dr Forest W Cathern’s home in Denton Texas. A former Patoka resident he had lived in Clinton Illinois for years due to railroad work. Survived by wife Leone one sister Clara Jones Patoka and many relatives. Funeral and burial were held Tuesday December 27 in Clinton.

Santa Claus Visits Firemen Aid Local Kids

About 300 children enjoyed the annual Santa Claus visit organized by the local fire department with donations covering the goodies. Santa arrived on a fire truck, rode through the business district, and ended at the community Christmas tree where music played as treats were handed out. Firemen then delivered treats to shut ins unable to attend.

Merediths to mark 25th wedding anniversary

Mr and Mrs Henry Meredith will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on Saturday December thirty first. They will attend the New Year’s Eve watch service at Eaglin church Saturday night and hold an open house Sunday afternoon inviting friends to call.

New Opening Time Set at Local Post Office

By order of the Post Office department the local post office hours change. Starting January 3 1956 the office opens at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. daily except Sundays and holidays with no hours. Wednesdays run 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
