In honor of Mr. Roy Ballance birthday a gathering of relatives met Thursday evening at the Ballance home. Contests and games entertained both young and old and pie doughnuts cocoa and coffee were served later in the evening. Those present included Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Walton, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ballance, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ballance, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ballance and son Maurice, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Sears, Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Ballance and family, Misses Fayetta Maxine Belcher and Lora Ellen Ballance. Guests departed for home after wishing Mr. Ballance many more birthdays.
Chas Meyer youngest son of Mr and Mrs J F Meyer married Miss Edna Thalman daughter of Mr and Mrs John Thalman at the M E Church South parsonage Odin Illinois Rev Ralph Willis officiated. The couple long known in the community plan to live with the groom’s parents and begin life together with many friends wishing them happiness. Mr and Mrs A L Vallow of Clinton visited the family. Lucille Garrett shopped at Centra lia Monday.
A long list of visits and homecomings fills the week as residents head to and from Cropsey and nearby towns. Notables include Meyers family returning near Cropsey, extended family visits from Decatur and Kinmundy, and several Christmas holiday travelers to Decatur, Vernon, and St Louis.
Returning from a business trip to Centralia the car driven by C N Cruse overturned near Ray Starr residence north of the city injuring several occupants. Mrs Cruse Mrs Settem Mrs Quayle and Miss Clara Smith sustained bruises cuts and a dislocated shoulder with other injuries. They were taken home for medical care and are recovering.
The Patoka Woman's Club met on a Saturday afternoon at the gymnasium. New members elected included Ruth Pugh Minnie Peddicord Clyde Davis Clara Arnold and Bertha Danbury. The group planned Christmas baskets under the welfare committee and enjoyed a Literature Music and Art program led by chairwoman Josie Simcox featuring Silent Night Joy to the World and a paper on Christmas in the Home. A gift exchange followed the program and a Christmas tree added festive spirit.
Fenton A Caldwell born near Patoka July 17 1887 died December 18 1935 at age 48 years 5 months 1 day He married Maude Gore on April 5 1908 and had three children two sons who died in infancy one daughter Mrs Clelia Bassett Dayne Ellis grandson and an aged mother Lizzie Caldwell Survived by wife one daughter one grandson two brothers Peck and Walker one sister Mrs Arthur Sullens Aurora Ill He was ready and at rest.
The Patoka Indians defeated Odin 38 to 3 on Christmas afternoon in a strong showing on the local floor.
Alice Murfin hosted a four o clock tea from four to six honoring Mrs Walter Renner visiting from DeKalb. Ruth Pup served as guests include Mesdames Renner Smith Settem Potts Kirk Jones Martin Wasem Troyer Green Altom and Misses Trout Anderson Troyer Pugh.
