Miss Mac Eagan Leads Christmas League Meeting

The M. E. Church League met Tuesday evening December 23 with a lesson on Christmas and a Better World. Songs included It Came Upon the Midnight Clear and Long Silent Night. Ellen Mulvaney played piano solo. Luke 2 12 14 read. Anna Belcher spoke. Blanche McCallon and Ruby Eagan sang a vocal duet. Lucile Walker announced she will lead next Tuesday. Santa Claus left a treat though he could not attend. The meeting closed with a benediction.

Carl Hines and wife of Alma visited Patoka last Friday. A L Vallow of Clinton stayed with his mother Mrs Josie Vallow on Thursday night and Friday. Mr and Mrs Walter Renner and daughter Ibara of DeKalb visited with Mrs Renner and Barbara. Renner returned Sunday and Mrs Renner and Barbara will stay for the holidays. Frank Miller of St Elmo attended the Christmas program at the M E Church Sunday evening. Elizabeth Simcox spent the weekend with Dorothy Wasem of Trenton. Frank Porter of Springfield visited to spend holidays with his mother Mrs Lyte Porter. Archie Pugh and wife of Decatur are here to spend Christmas with Henry Pugh and wife.

Limestone pays back sevenfold in better yields says Illinois expert

Urbana December report from C M Linsley soils extension specialist at the University of Illinois states that every two dollars invested in limestone for acid soils yields about fifteen dollars in higher crop yields. He notes bankers will loan for limestone and that delaying purchase often stems from cash scarcity or misperception of value.

School Exhibit Awards Highlight Parent's Days

On Friday the exhibits were put up for Parent's Days. Juniors in Room Five, Sophomores in the office, and Freshmen in the assembly displayed fine work. Judges included Mrs. Nattier, Mrs. Munger, and Superintendent Kniseley for high school. Mrs. Gray, Mrs. Ballanceangi, Miss Chandler for grade school. Mt Vernon Orphanage Wins Hog in State Contest

The Methodist Orphanage in Mt. Vernon Illinois took first prize a 350 pound hog in a state poem composing contest with participation from several orphanages. The Lutheran Orphanage placed second earning a smaller hog with winners announced on KMOX Tuesday.

John Bagsby remains ill with bronchial pneumonia at home. O A Nattier shows improvement after weeks of illness and plans a store visit soon. Mordecai Lee recovers at home east of Patoka. Harvey man injured when shotgun discharges during rabbit hunt

Vesper Alexander of Harvey Illinois was shot in the back at thirty to forty feet by his hunting partner near the Dukes farm west of Patoka. He was treated at Mrs. Dukes home then at St Mary's Hospital Centralia where peritonitis developed. Doctors held little hope but later reports suggested a fair chance of recovery.

Equiping Institutions Nearing Completion

The state architectural division recommends awards of contracts for electrical work at Manteno state hospital and for electric heating plumbing piping and ventilation systems at the state school for the blind at Jacksonville. The total work amounts to about $15 000.

More than 800 Illinois Central System members receive leather passes engraved and signed by President L A Downs as Christmas gifts. Each pass grants free transportation for life to the holder and spouse, including veterans with forty years service or pensioners combined service and pension time. Surprises Mark Mrs Voaris Birthday Dinner

Mrs Chas Voaris received a joyful surprise party Sunday December 21 at her home west of Patoka. Fifty one relatives and friends attended with baskets while violin music was provided by John Sebert and William Voaris.
