The Patoka Oilers defeated Alma 35 to 31 in a tight Tuesday night battle. Charles Hawley led Patoka with six field goals as both teams displayed strong basketball, while the crowd was urged to catch future independent games showcasing fast, high quality play.
Mr and Mrs Albert Piercy entertained at dinner Sunday celebrating the age of their daughter Marcus Mr Lutz and ag Carl. Those celebrating the occasion were Mr and Mrs W M Ellis and family Mr and Mrs Fred Lutz and family of Sandoval Mr and Mrs Marion Peddicord Mr and Mrs Albert Piercey and daughter Marilyn. Mr and Mrs Charles Humes and daughter Mary Helen of Centralia spent Sundays with Mrs Fannie Chandler. Mr and Mrs L W Ballance and Mrs George Ballance visited. Mrs Ballance's daughter Elaine in Lincoln Saturday. Mrs T H Quayle of Decatur has been visiting her sister Mrs Mary J Underwood and other relatives recently. Mrs Quayle and Mrs Underwood spent one day last week visiting Mr and Mrs A D Nichols and family.
Mrs. Davis Jennings entertained the Sew-No-More club at her home last Thursday evening. The gathering was social and spent sewing, with refreshments served. Attendees included Mesdames Robert Eagan, Davis Jennings, Paul Logan, James Ballance, Willarth Mc Intyre, Marcus Cox and Harriett Smith.
The P T A holds a business meeting with the president leading a flag pledge and a hymn America. The program features two chorus selections by the high school chorus and Bress Quartet, a reading by Evelyn Easton, a clarinet quartet, and a discussion on Saturday and Sunday led by Mr. Potts.
The Victoria Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will hold its annual school of instruction on Tuesday December 19 1939 starting at 1 30 p m Rebecca Parker Grand Conductor will be in charge A covered dish luncheon will be served at 6 00 p m All members urged to attend and bring a dish.
The Eastern Star lodge met Monday evening with Mrs W W Mourfin installed as pianist. Mrs Abert Cruse served as installing officer and Mrs G J Wasem as installing marshal.
Mr and Mrs Orville Schroeder relocated to a new residence in the town’s western section this week confirming a local household shift.
James Warren Bobbett born May 5 1877 in Patoka Breezy Hill died December 8 1939 aged 62 years 7 months 3 days. He married Martha Knight December 24 1901 and Estella White January 29 1938 and leaves two sons a grandson a daughter in law two stepdaughters three sisters and many relatives. Funeral December 9 1939 at Vernon Methodist Church with interment in Viernes cemetery.
In the church basement on December 6, the Methodist Aid held a large gathering led by president Mae Simcox. Devotions by Carrye Alexander, scripture by Teresa Ballance, and prayer by Miller opened the session. An art icle on Christmas was read, a Bible quiz was staged, and prizes awarded. hostess presiding members served guests in a pleasant manner.
George Thalman died December 1 in Greenville Illinois at age 80. Funeral services were held December 3 at 2:00 PM in Greenville with attendees including Mrs Will Thalman of Patoka Les Thalman C. W. Thalman and wife of Vandalia Oscar Thalman and Mrs Bertha Stasik of Centralia.
Elsie Rossio appeals to Lasalle County readers to buy Christmas Seals and support sanatorium beds and education campaigns. The plea frames tuberculosis as an invasion threatening families, urging immediate action to fund detection and treatment locally.
Patoka High School and Grade School will present a musical program on December 21. A Christ ing Abdo will perform, and other school pupils will be distributed after the program. Admission is free.
H G Scott of this place was injured last week near Fairfield while working in the oil field. A spudding cable broke at the mast top and the seven-eights line fell around him, coils striking him on head shoulder and back. He received treatment at Fairfield and was moved to Centralia hospital where he remained until last Saturday. He had recovered enough to be up town Thursday.
The rummage and bakery fundraiser held Saturday yields a $27.10 donation from the Girl Scouts to the PT. IA treasury. Grateful thanks go to WN Cruse for building space and the Patoka Register for column support. Rose Moonnier extends appreciation to all participants.
T R Cox and wife hosted a turkey dinner for relatives including Roy and Marcus Cox of Vernon Arlie Sprinkle and Salem family members Gerald Thomas Robert Rose Mary and Flora Cox from Blooming ton Champaign. Visitors shared games and visiting then planned an annual reunion with next year set for October 20 in Vernon with Roy Cox and wife.
Jess Holloway of WPA will meet with Patoka township residents at Vernon High School gym Friday at 7 00 p m to discuss adding gravel roads. Attendees urged to join to pursue better roads.
The Edgar R. Rogier Post American Legion expresses gratitude for liberal donations toward their new home. Thanks are extended to Eva Rogier Milton Peddicord and L. W. Ballance. amounts will be published at a later date by the Post.
The Baptist Church reports ongoing revival with good attendance and conversions. Bro Robert Knight delivers nightly messages as plans form for a Christmas program. WMS meets Wednesday December 20 at Mrs Orville Genre's home with Mrs Ed Lawson leading. Sunday School at 9:30 Morning Worship 10 80 Evening Worship 7 00 Mid-Week Devotional Thursday 7 00. Jesus put us first.
Mrs. Carl Benesiel of Centralia spent Tuesday with Mrs. Dean Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Price are the parents of a baby boy born November 30. Virginia Brown of Kinmundy spent the weekend with Mrs. Walace Alexander.
Bobby Buck fifteen month old son of Mr and Mrs W T Buck of Centralia formerly of Petcka was seriously burned around his arms and legs Monday night when gasoline fumes ignited while Mr Buck was cleaning a washing machine He was treated at St Mary's Hospital and sent home the next day Also note Bro Birch of Dieterich filled an appointment at the Christian Church on Sunday
The Patoka church reports 132 in Sunday School, $11.38 offering, and fair morning worship. Evening service was canceled as the pastor attends Island Chapel revival with continued interest this week. Pansy Wasem led the Young People’s meeting. Ladies Aid quilted Wednesday in the basement.
Mr. Mills and wife and Ernie Mas cher and wife and daughter of Diet rich spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Richeson in honor of their thirty six th wedding anniversary. Mr. Mills is principal of the Diet rich high schoal. Al van Towler and Iris Belcher of Shobonier and Mrs. Madaline Porter and daughter Gayle and Lois Belcher were Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Ballanos. Bro Leo Belcher the Kaskaskia Associational Missionary who is bord r 9 meeting at Fairman called on Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Mojonnier Tuesday.
The House of David basketball team visits Patoka on December 26 at 8:00 p m for a Christmas night game. The bearded stars include Bill Steinecke and Sam Hamilton with Lefty Hynward and Chop Lyons, promising fast play and entertaining tricks for local fans. Tickets cost 35 cents for adults and 16 cents for schoolchildren.
The D. D. Club was entertained Tuesday evening November 28 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ellie Out house west of Patoka. A chill supper at 6 20 followed games and contests with prizes to Ralph Elliott and Wilbur Doolen. The club voted to send three dollars to the Good Will chair in Chicago and drew names for a Christmas exchange. The Christmas party will be at Roth Elliott’s home.
Patoka High School will present a Christmas program at the gym Thursday December 21 at 7 30 p m. The lineup includes vocal and instrumental ensembles with solos and quartets featuring Sonny Adams Evilena Jennings Brooks Meador Beryle Arnold Conway Malan Darvin Jones Mary Helen Jennings and Wesley Griffin among others.
The Patoka Woman's Club held its Christmas meeting Saturday afternoon at the school gymnasium with members helping in a drive for veterans hospitals materials and supporting a World Peace movement. Mrs. M. Spurgon presided as Rev. C. M. Miller spoke on The English Bible as Literature. A Golden Anniversary plan committee was formed and gifts were exchangedamid festive decorations.
Arthur Wayne Nattier and Joyce Doolen united in marriage on November 23 in Sharpsburg by Rev. A. E. Thomas. Attended by Mr. and Mrs. Maurcié Ballance this couple is well known locally. bridegroom works on the Britt farm.
Word has been received of the marriage of Mildred Whiter eham of fela to John Fender. They were married December 9 at St Charlies Mo.
