Fancy Work Club Met Last Friday

The Ladies Fancy Work club met at Mrs. W. W. Murfin home on Friday afternoon. Members and guests enjoyed entertainment plans for a New Years party and Christmas tree prizes. The group voted to continue mystery pals next year and adjourned to meet again in January at Mrs. C. M. Rogier’s.

Victoria Chapter Installs Officers in 1936 Year

After the Victoria Chapter meeting on Monday night the year 1936 officers were installed. Officers listed include Ada Belcher W M and Florence Limecox A M among others. Installing officers were Lillie Nattier and several others. the event drew a crowd with guests and social hour refreshments.

Vandalia Community Sales Draw Out-of-Town Buyers

Out of town buyers have attended Vandalia community sales for weeks, focusing on cattle and hogs at attractive prices. Last Friday buyers placed orders for hundreds of hogs, but limited hog supply left some disappointed. they pledged to return next Friday. Management thanks participants and hopes Fayette County farmers dispose of surplus stock for premium prices.

Bridgeport Trio Rolls to St Louis Stopover Visit

Mr and Mrs Leland Lathrop and Mrs Smith Dalrymple of Bridgeport traveled to St Louis on a business trip and spent a night in Patoka with Mrs Lizzie Gray, Dalrymple’s mother. Ross Walker of Clinton was a business visitor here Friday.

Dr. Martin H. Bickham director of WPA labor management will address a public meeting at the Court House in Salem Illinois Friday night December 13 at 7 30 pm on Democratic state policies. The public is welcome. Questions on WPA work may be asked and answered.

Nine Candidates Take Post Office Examination

The Civil Service examination for a new Patoka postmaster was held at Vandalia city hall on Saturday. Nine applicants sat the exam: W. E. Fields, Sam Cozad, Will Cain, Orville Genre, L. W. Ballance, Clarke Simcox, Theodore Meredith, Everett Howell, and Miss Mary Caldwell.

Saturday Evening Party at Settem Home

Mr and Mrs Ingvald Settem entertained friends Saturday evening with a pinochle party. Three tables were played with high scores won by Mrs Verle Kirk and Mr Elston Green. The floating prize went to Dale Altom and the consolation to Orville Schroeder. Refreshments were served by Mrs C N Cruse assisted by Ruth Pugh and Alice Murfin. Patoka Township Spelling Contest Winner Named

The Patoka township spelling contest held Saturday at Patoka school drew competitors from Hatch Vernon and Patoka. Miss Mary Eaglin eighth grade pupil won by spelling more words correctly than others and will compete for county honors on Saturday in Salem.

Methodist Aid Meeting At Mrs Roy Ballance’s Home

The Ladies of the M E Church Aid met at Mrs Roy Ballance’s home on Wednesday November 4 with fifteen members present. President Mrs Emma Smith led the devotional and Mrs Edna McGee prepared entertainment. Ice cream and cake were served. The January meeting will be with Mrs Edith Cruse.

Patoka Truck Smashes Into Chattanooga Store

James Wasem and Lynn Eagan, Patoka youths traveling from Florida to Patoka, crashed their orange laden truck into a Chattanooga grocery. front end and windows damaged, four to five hundred dollars in losses. Both men uninjured, load only lightly damaged, plan to buy another truck for holiday sales.

Library Board Elects New Officers and Members

The Library Board elected Maurice Ballance and E Irvin to fill vacancies left by Rev William Hay and Carrie Alexander. Josie Simcox was chosen president with Don Wilson as vice president Katie Nattier as secretary and treasurer.

Burial of Alonzo Wagstaff in Dora Bell Gray Town

Alonzo Wagstaff born September 17 1855 in Council Bluffs Iowa died December 8 1935 aged 80 years 2 months 21 days. He moved to Calhoun county at age five and to Dora Bell Gray’s town fifty years ago. Survived by four children Mrs Blanche Carse Princeton Indiana Mrs Fann Kinmundy and Roy Wer with whom he made his home six years ago plus grandchildren. Funeral Monday from Church South with Rev Kendall officiating. Interment in local cemetery.
