The Patoka oil field faces winter delays as rain sleet and freezing temperatures slow road transport and drilling. With seismograph surveys and planned tests continuing, field development may pause until spring while major operators and landowners weigh deep drilling against costs.
Announcement late Thursday night reports that W. E. Fields purchased Whit's Cafe. Whitson opened the cafe in the Ray Irvin building, then moved his family to Patoka from Ramsey. Fields, known locally, started in Patoka as a seeds and produce dealer, then barber, now plans to operate the cafe with his wife offering public dining services.
The Bid-a-Bit Bridge Club met at Mrs. Howard Riley’s home last Wednesday. Bonita Coleman won the visitors prize while Mrs. James Reed took high score and Dot Doolen low score prizes. attendees included Mesdames Ray Walton, James Reed, Forrest Oates, Cecil Binion, Marcus Cox, Gerald Livesay, Orville Schroeder, and Misses Alice Walde, Dot Doolen, and Bonita Coleman.
Mrs Meddie Hines marked her ninetieth birthday on December 7 at the home of her daughter Mrs Thomas Pugh at Patoka. A noon birthday dinner featured an angel food cake with candles. Guests included Mrs Maude Ellis and Mrs F W Pugh from Vandalia and Pa toka callers. Several relatives from Patoka centralia and Alma visited and gifts were given. Aunt Meddie, a Marion County native born in Tontitownship, has been in fragile health but attended several hours for the celebration.
Miss Goldie Goff and Bill Williams wed at St Louis on Monday December 6. Mrs Williams works at Howell Cafe and Mr Williams with Cypress Co as summer on their Claude Adams lease. They have rented an apartment and moved to Opal Jones residence at Vernon, receiving congratulations and best wishes.
Oil operators push ahead across Vernon region with wells on multiple estates including Pugh Adams Majonnier Ballance Hudspeth Wasam Meryman Nattier Maid Underwood Ingle Davidson Freyer Howell. Test wells near Orville Britt east of town halted. Shearer location east of Venon active. Morew land rig moved north. Cypress Oil No. 6 well near Claude Adams site planned.
After six months of fruitless negotiation Patoka village council rejects a proposed 35 000 bond issue for a municipal light plant. Officials cite high financing costs 15 percent in fees and interest over 20 years and warn bond holders could push rates up harming residents. The paper urges reattempt with a smaller home bond issue and existing funds to proceed.
Mrs Wilma Rogier hosted the Fancy Work Club gathering on a December Friday afternoon. Mrs Eva Potts led the entertainment with contests won by Mrs Els Way for the menu and Mrs Josephine Lay for the test question. Gift exchanges delighted members as anticipation built for January with hosts Mrs Georgia Settum and Mrs Ethel, and Mrs Wilma Rogier supplying entertainment.
School program lists Evalena Jennings and Connie Meadors poems and songs by students including Bruce and Max Folz and Margare Jett Nellie Greer Betty Wengert and others. Music by Blue Bonnet Sisters Reading by Nellie Greer Clarinet Quartet led by Evelyn Ellis with Rev Sam P Jones as speaker.
Ed gar R Rogier Post 543 calls for strong Americanism through education and loyalty to the nation. It stresses improving schools, teaching citizenship, and safeguarding youth against radical influence. A county meeting of all American Legion posts in Merion County is planned at Centralia on Friday evening near November 17.
Local merchants in Patcka deck their stores with Christmas decor and wide gift selections. Toy and useful gift items plus foods are promoted with money saving prices as two weeks of holiday advertising and home trading advantages begin. Christmas Eve hours and seasonal specials are noted.
The local Parent Teachers Organization met Wednesday evening December 1 with President Mrs P J Majonnier presiding. Minutes by Miss Floren Cain approved. Committees appointed for Christmas seals sales and school community coverage. Program featured four clarinet soloists, piano piece, and a school drama. Discussion covered reading methods homework recess and home school cooperation. Next meeting set for January 5 at 7 30 with Mr V R Kirk in charge.
The E G G Club met Treva evening for a sewing gathering. Members drew names to exchange gifts at the December 16 meeting to be held at Mine Weow a Basin. Fruit salad and rookies were served at the close.
