Older Boys Conference at Marion Opens After Trip

James Emerson Jr reports the Older Boys Conference held at Marion November 1928. Delegates arrived from Centralia at 11 15 and joined sessions at First Baptist Church with singing and talks by Rev. Charles A. Carmen and Earle Merritt. The schedule included fellowship meals at three churches, afternoon addresses, a banquet at Marion township high school gym, a pageant by Granite City and Marion boys, and plans for the next conference in East St Louis or Centralia. Attendees and locals noted the long trip and returning home after lunch in Marion.

Former resident dies in farm accident near Lane

Emery Walker aged forty seven died Wednesday after being shot in the head on his Lane area farm. He left home to tend stock with a small rifle and was found wounded at a fence by farm hands and family, transported home where he died around 1 30 PM. He was part of a large local family and usually visited old home folks each year. His brother Courtney reported details from Lane.

Christmas Fruit Cakes and Local Social Notes

Christmas fruit cakes priced at 40 cents per pound. Patoka baker Robert Caldwell traveled with Wm Ramsey and daughter Marie from Chi to Patoka on Sunday morning to enroll in school. Belcher and Dewitt Jen and Miss Leona Walz and Cruse were entertained at the home of Mr and Mrs in Contrafia Wednesday evening.

Kidnappers Try to Kill Youth Near Teutopolis

Terre Haute youths William Souder and E Grigsly abducted A J Stephenson steering him toward Effingham then Teutopolis. They assaulted him with a blackjack in a field, robbed him, and fled on foot before being captured to Teutopolis police. They faced kidnapping and assault charges after guns were found.

Wife of Vandalia attorney killed in truck accident

Mrs. James Monroe Albert, wife of J. M. Albert, longtime Vandalia resident, was fatally struck by an Alton packing truck en route to Patoka and Centralia. The front wheel passed over her head. the driver faced only an inquest with no charges.

Community Club Tackily Celebrates Party at Rogiers Home

The Community club held a tacky party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Artie Rogiers Monday night December 3. Members present included Mr. and Mrs. Anson Griffin Mr. and Mrs. Jim Thompson Mr. and Mrs. Wes Martin Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wickenhouser Mr. and Mrs. Levi Hill Mr. and Mrs. Carson Chandler and The Armstrong Sisters. The evening featured music games and chatting with refreshments of pie and cocoa. Everyone left late hoping for a repeat event.

Vandalia Beats Brownstown In Week Schedule Clash

Vandalia collected a 41 to 14 victory over Brownstown after a tough week with two defeats. Earlier, Patoka edged Vandalia 23 to 21 as Forehand and Turner were ejected in a mid game incident. Farina looms as the next opponent, having defeated Vandalia twice this season.

Rural Route Established on Island of Hawaii

The first rural route on Hawaii island and second in the Hawaiian group was ordered effective December 16. The Hilo route covers 27 miles serving 291 families about 877 people, with a 12.5 mile retrace due to few cross roads. The Haiku route on Maui has operated since 1919.

The Graf Zeppelin carried a total of 101 683 pieces of mail on its return to Germany, including 49 745 letters and 51 938 post cards. New York City processed 47 358 letters and 49 529 post cards, with Lakehurst adding 2 387 letters and 2 409 post cards before boarding. The last New York shipment left Jersey City at 9 12 p.m. on Sunday and arrived at Lakehurst at 11 23 p.m.

Bible Grove Post Office Robbed County Town Tale

The Bible Grove post office in Clay county near Louisville was robbed Monday night November 19. On reopening Tuesday morning the postmistress Mrs Hall found parcel post packages broken into and stolen, along with outgoing first class mail postage stamps and other mail valuables.
