Vernon Woman's Society of Christian Service reports $800 saved for church basement work and invites the community to an ice cream sale with three flavors at 5 cents per dip on Friday the 18th from 6:30 on the schoolhouse grounds, followed by entertainment at 8:30 featuring the Rhythm Band.
All American Legion Auxiliary members are urged to bring pies for a picnic on Saturday August 14. Others may donate pies as well, according to the committee.
A fundraiser night for Hatch Host Meador Cemeteries netted 175.00 with expenses 66.30 and mowing costs 98.15 to date. Donations list many individuals and local contributors, including Huddleson Monuments and the Meador family, reflecting community support for the cemeteries.
Mrs. Virginia Bellamy marked her ninetieth birthday with an open house at her Sandoval home on Monday August 9. Guests from Sandoval and surrounding communities, including C C Bellamy Centralia and many relatives, shared flowers cakes and cards while she recalled old times and sang Grandfather's Clock. Refreshments were provided by local young women and guests heard from attendees about her life in Kentucky and Sandoval Patoka areas.
The Outdoor Meals club held its last regular meeting of the year with 10 members present. An open discussion decided on County Fair exhibits while Wilma Pugh presented the lesson Good Posture and Dar lene Wortman led the games. A salad and drink were prepared by the girls.
All schools in the Patoka Unit Dist No 100 start September 7 1948. Textbooks will be supplied free of charge to all pupils. le Homer N Potts Supt.
Four H girls present a local achievement event at Legion Hall Patoka at 2 o clock on August 25. They preview outfits and flowers before heading to the Salem County Fair.
Pastor Harrymas leads morning worship at 10:30 AM after Sunday School for all ages at 9:30. Broadcast rehearsal at 1:30 and program at 6:30 precede Evening Worship 8:00 to 8:35. Birthday songs honored Sue Wagstaff and Mr and Mrs Davis. Association meeting slated for Sept 15–16 here.

Lion Orville Schroeder announced the Third Annual Fall Festival features Grandpappy Doolittle, radio star Toby Nevins, for two days of performances beginning September 3. The entertainer, touring Hawaii and Philippines in October, has appeared on WLW Cincinnati and WJW Cleveland programs with many guest stars. Governor Earl Warren will speak at the Illinois State Fair on August 19, with free admission to grounds and grandstand until 2:00 pm for the afternoon racing crowd.
The Ladies Fancy Work Club held a theatre party at the Illinois in Centralia hosted by Mrs. Nuzleman. Members attending with Mrs. Coleman included J. F. Matchett E. L. DeLay E. L. Rogier Elsie Gray Roy Jones H. N. Potts Ss. M. Spurgeon Cleo Walker Minnie Meece Florence Simcox and Eunice Altom. Two members Mrs. O. J. Hill and Mrs. Leslie Wasem were unable to attend. They returned home after six o clock feeling it was a delightful afternoon.
Mrs. John Evans Jr entertained her Pinochle club Thursday afternoon at her Patoka home. Attendees included Mrs. James Wasem, Mrs. William Boyyd, Mrs. Orville Schroeder, Mrs. Coburn Richeson, Mrs. Dale Nattier, Mrs. Brooks Meador, and Mrs. Homer Potts.

The Lester Home Bureau Unit met with Mrs. Harold Chandler on July 22 with one absence. Minutes were read, roll call listed trees visible from kitchens. Chandler and Cox visited Salem on June 29 for lessons on Whole Meal Salads and Refreshing Summer Drinks. Arnold and Jones attended Salem on July 13 to receive lessons scheduled for August 19 at Mrs. Dale Arnold’s home.
Mr and Mrs Dewey Cole and children from near Forsythe visited friends here over Sunday and Monday. Several local families welcomed relatives and friends from Patoka Vernon downs and Detroit with mentions of short visits and a kitchen shower for Cecil and Mrs Robertson.
Vandalia residents Rev and Mrs J H Reeter spent Thursday with Miss Opal Jones. Charles Rosenbaum and family from Peoria vacationed here with his father M N Rosenbaum. Ora McKinney and her grandson visited Clinton this week at the Saterlee home. Mr and Mrs An son Jon of Eure Bay of Mi e stop. indicates local social round.
Mrs. Martha E Cain hosted a large family gathering at Fairview Park Centralia on Sunday August 8. Attendees included many of her children grandchildren and great grandchildren from Patoka Tamaleo Maywood Bellwood Melrose Park and Centralia. A noon meal, photos and playground activities filled the afternoon.
Miss Darlene Wortman won third place in county competition for flower arrangement on July 28. The second place winner could not attend the State Fair. Wortman was next in line to attend as an alienate. Wortman and Wilma Pugh plan to travel Friday through Tuesday. The Patoka Panthers 4-H Age Club met at Charles Nattier’s home Monday night to review upcoming fairs the local 4-H Fair sponsored by the Patoka Lions Club on Sept 4 and the County 4-H Fair at Salem Fair Grounds a week later. Bobby Thalman spoke about the Indiana 4-H camp four days long, with attendees gaining fun and training. After, members enjoyed recreation and refreshments hosted by Mrs. Maurice Nattier.
Mrs Nora Chriss expresses gratitude to all who sent cards letters and flowers during her hospital stay and thanks the Indies for coming by to canned beans for her assistance and support.
Wernsman returns home from Mennonite Hospital Bloomington after eye operation and doing favorably. Mrs. Davis convalesces at home after Vandalia Hospital stay. Their daughter Mrs. Boyd Cook and Gretchen stay with them. Wagstaffs and Sheryl In in Kentucky with Mr. Wagstaff this week. Mazer family back in Chicago after two weeks with Crawford family. Mrs. Holland and Cindy Ann visit Dixon to see Hollands and Ryps. radio interview on WENA. Brown of Chicago visits mother Martha Cain. Hamilton Gaston of Sullivan visits Rose Britt and Pearl.
Arthur L. Irvin recounts Patoka croquet history from 1925 starting a court on Elm Street to license disputes, then free use by John Simcox, moves to John Stevens farm, Marcus Cox with electric lights, and finally two courts at City Park. A August 14 tournament offers premiums. pension listed for longtime players, with Warney Alexander hosting chess. Members include Paul Logan, Jim Ballance, Rip Grupp, Harold Foltz, Luke Walker, Marcus Cox, many others.
Jeannie Lee was taken to a children's hospital in St Louis for a clinic and released. Paula Sue Jones is ill at home. Several residents from Charleston Paris Mt Vernon and Sandoval visited and guests including the Green family Pike family and Paine family were noted. A softball tournament lands Aug 18 to 21 at Patoka City Park.
