Vernon lodge boosts District initiation event in wartime era

Vernon 1.0.0.F. Lodge No. 324 hosted about one hundred District members on August 3 in the local hall. The Centralia Degree Staff presented an initiatory degree for four candidates Herschel Lawrence Myron A Cooley Cecil Hollingsend and Clarence Guyman. Reinstatements included John Gehrken Floyd Arnold Frank Lake Frank Robertson and Luther M Brown. Rebekahs served ice cream cake and coffee. Minnie Peddicord is visiting in St Louis this week with sister Mrs JC W Ehlers and family.

The W C T U hosts a speech contest on Thursday August 17 at 730 pm in the Methodist Church. The program features a chorus from the Baptist Church and solo contestants numbered 1 through 7. Carlyle Defeats Patoka 9-5 In Local Baseball

Carlyle defeated Patoka 9-5 last Sunday at home. Walt Marohl pitched for Patoka allowing eight hits. J Payne led Patoka with a triple and two singles as Patoka led 38-2 entering the seventh inning. Carlyle scored four in the seventh and three in the ninth. Next game, Carlyle at Patoka Park against Kinmundy this Sunday.

The Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church met Thursday afternoon in a class room. Mrs S M Spurgeon announced a White Elephant Sale at the September meeting and a Fair in the fall. Gala Dudley gave a temperance story speech earning a Silver Medal at the Christian Church and a Gold Medal at the Methodist Church in Sandoval.

Village Board Bans Dancing and Sunday Ball Games in Park

At the August 3 meeting the Village Board voted to prohibit dancing and commercialization of ball games on Sundays in Patoka city park and ban hunting there. Permissions to use the park must be obtained from the Village Clerk. The board also discussed a water exploration project and moved a test hole from the new high school site to the James Wernsman farm for further testing.

The Vernon Home Bureau met at Mrs. Essie Robinson's home with nineteen members and two visitors. Four members will help at the Marion County Fair and twelve others will bake pies for serving. Local Boy Scouts Take Four Day Trip

Harold Foltz and Raymond Britt drove eight scouts from Patoka at 8 30 a m on Monday August 7 for a four day journey to southern Illinois and northern Kentucky. They camped fished and swam at Kentucky Lake and returned Thursday afternoon August 10.
