Tax talk from Murphysboro Independent on sales tax plan
The Murphysboro Independent argues taxes should not be hidden in prices. It supports merchants adding a 2 percent sales tax to items over 25 cents to remind residents that a new tax exists and to pressure lawmakers to cut overall property taxes after January 1. It argues the tax is not a substitute and fears no past reduction in general taxes when new levies are imposed.
