During the Salem reunion a free gray pony was given away by Bob Hancock. Seventy five entrants registered ages six to fourteen. Burdett Williams of Alma won after seven numbers were drawn and promised to care for the pony, saying he would return early next morning.
Judges Wright Jett Dove publish 1930 1931 circuit court assignments across counties including Fayette Marion Montgomery Christian Shelby Clay Effingham Clinton Jasper and others with specified Mondays for each docket and county. The list assigns dates from August through November across multiple counties and judges.
Last Sunday the Humes families and friends gathered at Pope's Bluff for a day of outing and a reunion. A noon feast was shared with well filled baskets and a sumptuous dinner enjoyed by all. Attendees included Wm. Humes and family Lon Hazelwood and Edd Hayes Centralia Mrs Ed Stein Sandoval Roy Benoist and family Chas Benoist and family Mr Vernon Mrs Margaret Stewart and daughter Effingham Joe Humes and wife Heyworth and possibly others.
The Superior Mutual Benefit Association reports over 250 new members between July 1 and August 2, growing its base. It notes more than 20 claims paid this year, with 15 paid before burial, backed by a steady benefit reserve. A March 19 certificate issue introduces immediate full-force coverage without graduation, including accident benefits.
Four-H club girls from seventy five Illinois counties will compete in the state fair style show led by W. H. Smith Urbana. Last year forty counties were represented and Miss Evelyn Mattison Morris won first and will represent Illinois in Chicago at the International Club Congress. The event runs during fair days with local champions advancing through county shows and contestants designing and making their outfits for judging. The top prize includes representing Illinois at the Four-H Congress in Chicago and cash awards.
George Geiger and his wife of Rockford Illinois visited Patoka for a weekend with friends. It was their first Patoka trip in years and George sought old acquaintances. He left Patoka thirty years ago for Haldeen Illinois with Illinois Central and later settled in Rockford.
Poultry specialists plan three meetings in Springfield during the Illinois State Fair. August 19 20 and 21 the senate chamber in the state house hosts forenoon sessions under E G Horner chief poultryman. First session examines licenses for flock and hatchery inspectors to meet American Standard of Perfection.
The August 8 Lesson-Sermon emphasizes love as a divine quality with Bible citations from First John and a key quote from Science and Health. Performances include a piano solo by Mary Williams, a talk on Jesus as Prophecy, and concluding with a benediction and secretary’s report. Leader Dean Anderson supervision.

Bobby Eaglin a 13 year old Patoka youth remains aloft in an old apple tree after 142 hours of continuous tree dwelling. He ascended August 1 and continues to endure sweltering conditions with food and water delivered by rope while his father and Marion Eaglin provide safety and encouragement. Father reports no mishaps aside from a brief lightning scare, and the family hopes for a return before September school begins.
Mrs Willis, stepmother of Rev. R. E. Willis of Patoka, died at her Centralia home at 11 40 am Wednesday August 6 after a short illness from a paralytic stroke. Funeral at M E Church South Centralia Friday August 8 at 2 00 pm with Rev. Humphrey of Odin presiding.
W. J. Schroeder P. J. Mojonnier J. A. Jennings George Williams Claude Foster Joe Knight John Williams Artie Rogier and Martin Hopkins motored to St. Louis Wednesday to attend a meeting of the milk producers of the St. Louis territory.
The Pato Ka baseball schedule lists games on Sundays from August 17 at Sefton to October 12 at Saas. Venues alternate between there and here with St Elmo Prairie Mound Breese Glenridge Saas noted. The lineup shows open date September 21 and locations vary by week.
Illinois newspaper leaders invite President Hoover to dedicate the University of Illinois School of Journalism Hall of Fame. The delegation hopes ten busts will be displayed, including Melville E. Stone and Joseph P. Medill. The invitation was taken under advisement by the President.
A White Leghorn hen tested by the Illinois Department of Agriculture in Quincy established a new endurance record by laying an egg each day for 166 consecutive days from February 1 to July 1. The bird, part of a five-hen pen owned by Combs Poultry Farms of Sedgwick Kansas, had 261 eggs in the first nine months and could place high in the national record if the trend continues.
Getting Ready For Election outlines the 1930 31 calendar with poll hours and key deadlines. It lists filing dates in September and October, certification by the secretary of state, posting of notices and ballots, and ends with the general state and county election on November 4.
Rev. 8S. M. Spurgeon and family of Patoka attended the Corley annual reunion at Kitchell Park Pana Illinois on August 3. Spurgeon related to the Corleys on his mother's side. He reported 130 present and a great time was had by all. Officers include Spurgeon president and Attorney C. Corley of Decatur secretary.
Salem riders Charles Aikman Buddy Ogden and Charles Stevenson circled the Court House Square for 360 hours to set a new National Endurance Record surpassing the former mark by nearly 100 hours. They rode two hours on then one hour off, using the same bicycle, amid heat and tire punctures while raising funds for a permanent Scout Headquarters in Bryan Memorial Park. Local donations and business ads contributed about 70 dollars plus larger gifts from E W Clark and others.
The Illinois highway department allocates 32.843 million dollars for 1930 to pave 838 miles of bond roads, build 120 bridges and 12 grade separations, with bids pending for August and September. The effort provides jobs for about 8,200 workers and aims to ease metropolitan traffic and advance the bond issue program under Governor Emmerson.
Joseph Yardley of Patoka area was badly burned when filling a truck with gasoline while holding a lantern. The blast damaged the truck cab and caused severe burns to his face head and body. The incident occurred last week in a rural location southeast of Patoka.
