The Pasadena Planning Commission asks 13 cities how meters are viewed by merchants and officials, hinting at reviving the meter question. Past votes in March 1949 November 1950 and March 1955 showed public disfavor for meters, with 1949 even a tight 10 133 to 10 046 result.
The column recalls Pasadena’s parking meter battles from 1939 to 1955, noting Warren Dorn’s early bid against veterans and three opponents for the Board of City Directors, and showing shifting public opinion. Public bodies and the Chamber of Commerce wavered, with the Planning Commission urged to drop the meter issue as times changed.
Dr. W Shelburne Brown recalls Pasadena College origin from Nazarene era in 1908 on a former ranch. The college plans a 10 year 20 million expansion by 1980 with a new 1 million library and more land purchases to support growth including a future track and football field. The old ranch house will become a museum as the campus enlarges from 30 to about 47 acres.
The California Republican League CRL held a San Diego convention stressing issue oriented forums for moderates. Leaders Sandy Rae and Leonard War described a plan to avoid provocative resolutions and focus on practical middle-of-the-road solutions. Delegates debated property tax reform private enterprise in governance and other policy topics.
Airman Jeffrey W. Aagaard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth M. Aagaard of Alladena, has graduated from the DoD Information School basic course at Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana. He completed training in information and communications techniques to prepare for assignments at all USAF levels. Aagaard is a 1965 graduate of Muir High School and attended Pasadena City College before entering the Air Force.
The Pasadena Library Board opposed consolidating Hill Avenue and Allendale branches citing preserved service. Hill Avenue to stay, Allendale may get a new site. report to City Manager noted no land-use or planning changes. Board actions included hearings on gas pumps, loop street, Rose Bowl parking charges, and new police vehicles.
Three leading newspapers from the San Gabriel Valley name editors Ed Essaviter Hitiler Richard Tracy and Jim Wiggins as panelists for the November 7 regional Business Outlook Conference at Huntington Sheraton Pasadena. They will interview business and education leaders during a Meet the Press style session in the morning. Tickets cost 7.80 and may be purchased at local chambers. the event is sponsored by the San Gabriel Valley Associated Chambers of Commerce.
Cadet Michael H. Carrier son of Mr and Mrs Charles R Carrier Jr of Altadena starts his third year at the U S Air Force Academy. He completed summer jump training at Fort Benning Georgia and volunteered for five jumps earning a parachutist badge. Carrier, a 1965 Passadena High School graduate, swam and played water polo at the academy.
Douglas M. Sanford, son of Mrs Mildred A Sanford of Pasadena, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB. He is to enter specialized schooling at Keesler APB Mississippi as a communications electronics specialist.
Willard School Troop 355 led by Mrs James M Brayshaw Jr and Asst Leader Mrs R D Laird hosted 45 girls from Troops 34 and 433 for an afternoon of games. The event included Juliette Low anniversary observations, slides on Australian Guides, international games, a dress parade of 1869 styles, and a best costume award won by Cheryl Ellis.
Pasadena High School bands claimed top prizes at the Chaffey Tournament of Bands in Ontario. The marching unit won the six foot sweepstakes trophy and marching trophy, performed a halftime show Stereo in Motion, and received a cash prize to support a Cotton Bowl trip. The girls drill team also earned the sweepstakes trophy as part of the event.
