Area Head of United Church Dies in Pasadena

The Reverend Dr. Clarence F. McCall, Conference Minister of the Southern California and Southwest Conference of the United Church of Christ, died in Pasadena. Born 1912 in Akita Japan, he led 166 congregations in the region since 1965 and was named a top leader by the United Church Herald. Services were held Friday at First Congregational Church in Pasadena.

Well-Baby and Prenatal Clinics Run by Alhambra Health Center

In Temple City and South San Gabriel, Alhambra Health Center conducts Well-Baby Clinics with volunteers aiding nurses, weighing and measuring infants, recording data, and supervising clinic operations. The Temple City session runs Monday mornings 8:30 to 11 at Live Oak Park, Bogue St South San Gabriel sessions run Tuesday and Wednesday mornings 8:20 to 11 at Garvey Park, Emerson Place. Marines in Vietnam Civic Action and Ground Operations

Members of the Third Marine Division conduct large scale search and destroy missions in South Vietnam. The unit also runs civic action programs aiding villagers in building wells culverts small bridges and schools with support from the Marine Corps Reserve Civic Action Fund.

Training Slated For Local Man

Anthony P. Piatrillo of Temple City will serve two weeks of active duty training Aug 12 to 26 at Letterman Army Hospital San Francisco. He is a sergeant with the U S Army Reserve 49th General Hospital unit from Southern California led by Col Homer C Stilson M D. The hospital trains reservists year round and two weeks annually on active duty. Piatrillo joined the service in 1968 and will provide general medical and support services to patients including Vietnam casualties.

Brentwood Foundation filled three board vacancies at a Tuesday dinner, welcoming Shields Kentzsch Robert M. Davis and William Faith. Marine Sgt Heevey J. Christyto Welcomed, son of Mrs Ethel Harzke, received Combat Crewman wings for ten combat missions with MAG 1 in South Vietnam. MAG 18 airground team supports Marines with close air and search and destroy missions.

Schneider Completes Hospital Corps School Training

Schneider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl L. Schneider of Temple City, completed the basic Hospital Corps School at the U S Naval Hospital in San Diego. The four month course trains hospital corpsmen and WAVES to assist with dressings, temperatures, and ward care and prepares for duties in physical exams, first aid, operating rooms, laboratories and X ray rooms. Ensign Jeffrey T Vernallis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J Vernallis of San Gabriel, flew his first solo in a T 34 Mentor trainer while in flight training with Training Squadron One at Pensacola Florida. His squadron trains future Navy and Marine pilots in basile flight, instrument, and formation flying.

Brentwood Foundation funds aid and scholarships announced

The Brentwood Foundation distributes funds from the Trentwood Savings and Loan to worthy groups. Six scholarships of 200 dollars each were awarded to forty Monrovia High School seniors and two Dugrle High School seniors. Recipients will attend senior colleges as the program may expand. Monrovia Police freed three boys trapped in a county storm drain after a worker covered the exit. The boys entered through an open mandale Cove and were rescued after neighbors called authorities.

County Rosemead Storm Drain Project Agreement

County Flood Control District and the city of Rosemead reached an agreement during construction of a new storm drain system. Supervisor Frank G. Bonelli noted the district would cover portions of curb and installation costs for the second Potrero Grande unit, with the city contributing park funding. Construction was accepted last September under a $12 million contract awarded to L. H. Woodds & Sons, Inc.

Bids Opened for Arcadia Wash Repair in Temple City

Bids opened Friday for repair of the Arcadia Wash in Temple City. Supervisor Frank G Bonelli announced bids unsealed in County Flood control offices. Project by Walter J Wood estimates about 85000 dollars for 700 feet of channel work at Davies Drive. Work to begin within two weeks after contract award and lasting about two years.

Arson Suspect Sought After Fires Near Tem ple City

Investigators seek an elderly, gray haired man linked to a series of arson efforts at Robert Heuser’s home on Temple City Blvd. A fire destroyed two cardboard outbuildings and damaged drapes and an ice chest, with estimated damage around $5000. Cathy Heuser observed the suspect near the residence. County firefighters contained the fires.
