Two men were rescued from the sea by a passing freighter after a private plane crashed 200 miles off the coast. The Coast Guard reported the survivors as W. W. Drake of Long Beach and J. Tracer, 35, of Corona Del Mar. William Newton, 26, of Lakewood was missing. The plane rented from a Long Beach airport plunged near the Norwegian freighter Castleville, which lowered a boat to retrieve the survivors. No reason was given for the plane being so far at sea.
General Earle E. Partridge told a Senate Subcommittee that the United States currently has no operational fighters fast or high enough to intercept the Russian Bison bomber. He noted ongoing development of supersonic fighters and a new air-to-air missile to address the long-range threat.
Mrs. Ann Hopkins of Wilmington was cleared of rabies after a dog she played with two weeks earlier died of rabies in the county pound. Her trip triggered a countywide alert with stops in Arizona Boulder City Nevada and Las Vegas as authorities investigated the potential exposure.

In Grand Blanc near Flint Michigan more than 200 workers from rival unions clashed with chains pipes and bats at the General Motors Fisher Body plant. The fight spilled from inside to the parking lot leaving at least 10 hospitalized and prompting an emergency call to state police who arrived with riot guns but found the confrontation over. The dispute was between riggers and millwrights over job assignments.
In Lake Wales Florida a woman described as a model mother killed her three young daughters Shirley five Pamela three and Jan one then shot herself in the breast. She was in critical condition in a hospital and did not explain the act to her husband. Police found the bodies in their beds and the mother on the floor.
Thirty-one persons were believed dead in the crash of a Guatemalan Aviateca plane. Wreckage was sighted on a Sierra De Las Minas peak at 8500 feet with no signs of life. Some wreckage had burned as search helicopters reported.
George T. Turner 49 resigns as chief field deputy to Supervisor Herbert C. Legg. On leave since April after being cleared on charges he took a $10 000 bribe to influence Leggs vote on county rubbish contracts. Turner, a Long Beach resident, will leave June 6 to pursue a real estate career in Orange County.
A bottle containing live polio virus broke aboard a Capital Airlines flight from Baltimore to Pittsburgh exposing at least 19 crew members to possible infection. The plane was grounded in Pittsburgh after the incident. Following Salk guidance, those near the virus received gamma globulin and Salk vaccine. Twenty-two passengers were aboard part of the flight. officials say danger was avoided as the break occurred in a baggage compartment.
President Eisenhower, speaking at Baylor University in Waco Texas, called World Communism a gigantic failure and urged Iron Curtain peoples to walk fearlessly toward freedom under Western leadership as an antidote to tyranny.

Police said she may have returned west and New Mexico City would be checked. She disappeared the night before a seven week tour of Europe with her parents Mr and Mrs Bob F Roberts of San Bernardino.
Washington weighed a possible invitation to visit Moscow as officials said no invitation had arrived yet. The White House and Pentagon indicated top military leaders would likely accept if allowed with few restrictions, while Russia reportedly invited a few Air Force officers to Moscow Aviation Day on June 24. No official word confirmed if the Joint Chiefs would attend.

Identical 21 year old twin sisters underwent a kidney transplant at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. Wanda Foster of Chandler Oklahoma donated a healthy kidney to her sister Edith Helm of Sand Springs Oklahoma in the first such operation involving women. The operation yesterday lasted four and a half hours and both are reported in very good condition.
A man identified as James Dorris, about 58, an ex convict, was blown apart in an early morning blast on a North Side street. Detective Robert Neville said the victim likely carried a bomb that exploded.
