An explosion ripped through a nitro glycerine processing wing of a dynamite factory in Bilbao, Spain, killing ten workers and injuring at least thirty. Big wall and roof debris flew into the air as a mushroom cloud rose above the wrecked wing.
In Nicosia, Sir John Harding ordered an ironclad curfew from 4 am on 13 towns to prevent violence during Greek independence day celebrations. Over 160000 residents were confined, with bans on street traffic except for doctors and news staff. The curfew disrupted church services and shifted to radio broadcasts for all faiths.
Stockton and Bakersfield Junior College students captured the sweepstakes award at the Southern California Forensic Assn tournament held at Pasadena Nazarene College. The event drew 23 teams from across California.

He criticized the Eisenhower budget cuts to the Air Force, calling them a second-best force. Kefauver spoke during a California primary tour, dedicating a school and attending a Legion luncheon.
Three Washington internes sought for urgent treatment after exposure to meningococcal sepsis were found by Hialeah police. They were taken to Dr. Tom Frell for examination while one patient in Washington’s University Hospital was confirmed exposed. two others may also have been exposed.
In Algiers a number of French settlers and Muslims were killed as violence spread across revolt-torn Algeria. The death toll rose despite the French military and political offensive aimed at ending the month of fighting.
Danish printers joined a widening Scandinavian strike wave. Copenhagen newspapers planned loudspeaker broadcasts in public squares and considered resuming mimeographed news sheets used during the war years.
The Air Pollution Control District forecast continued smog in Pasadena today with heat lingering from yesterday. Temperatures yesterday peaked at 83 degrees and forecasters expected only a slight cooldown today.
The Pasadena Star-News and The Pasadena Independent sell to Twin-Coast Newspapers Inc, controlled by the Ridder family. Change in control is immediate. The Star-News and The Independent stay separate with a combined Sunday edition, local management to set policy. Ridder moves to publisher role, with family relocating to Pasadena.
The Star-News passes from the Prisk family to Twin Coast Newspapers Inc a Ridder family affiliate. Bernard J. Ridder succeeds Prisk as publisher with Mrs Neva Prisk Paddock as president. Long Beach Pasadena and Colorado Street publishing building are involved.
Allen Thomas Brock Jr. 15 brooded over his father who beat his mother on a poverty struck farm. He says his father fixed the washing machine, then kicked his mother in the eye and stomach when she could not run it. He described the abuse and his decision that it would not stop.
