President Carlos Castillo Armas placed Guatemala under a state of siege and the army in control after protests on the capital’s main street left four students dead and 17 wounded. The crackdown on alleged communist agitation prompted the mobilization.
Three men in trench coats shot dead a Sampson Smithson friend of the jailed "Scarface Tom" in Maida Vale London. The murder fuels fears of a Chicago style gang war in Britain, the first such killing since the 1920s.
About 1,200 members of the La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux arrived in Fresno for their three day annual state convention. The group known as 40 et 8 is linked to the State Legion’s 38th annual convention starting Thursday with 10,000 delegates expected. In Chicago, some 65 West Coast Airlines pilots prepared to strike at midnight unless pay demands are met.

A Duarte liquor store was held up for the second time in a month. A 16 year old youth was arrested on attempted armed robbery charges after an Arcadia holdup was aborted. Clerk John Hamilton reported the bandit took $75.
Troops supported by aircraft moved into the Yerba Santa area to quell bandit clashes with police. Seven people were killed and two wounded in a weekend battle. Cattle rustling and local feuds are noted as the region’s underlying tensions.
A Los Angeles man, William E. Hunt, 44, died after the car he rode in failed to make a curve east of Riverside and rolled down an embankment. Hunt was thrown from the vehicle and died from injuries. His daughter, 17 yearold Bessie Chapman, suffered minor injuries. The driver, Glenn A Spaulding, 29, also of Los Angeles, was uninjured.

A B47 bomber from Smoky Hill AFB crashed and burned in a wheat field near Salina Kansas early today killing the three crew members. The dead include First Lt Charles W Ward 25 co pilot from Pacoima California and his parents Mr and Mrs Thomas W Ward of Pacoima.

Oscar P. Baker of Ventura Boulevard faced a $10 fine or two days in jail for driving slowly in the inside lane on Louise Avenue. He had only $5, refused to call his wife for more money, and the judge reduced the fine to $5, freeing him.
