A resident in The Pas describes his growing interest in local issues since moving in 1972 and his intent to write a column. He recalls listening to debates on Por ky Packers drainage ditches and blacktopped streets and criticizes what he sees as mayoral overreach and focus on rhetoric over council action.
Buckberger driving car 64 Pink Lady sponsored by Carrol Motors Ltd won Sunday Sept 2 at Valley West after starting last in a 24 car field. Dust interrupted the race as 6 cars rolled but Buckburger navigated through to take the checkered flag. Eleven Thompson cars contested the event with drivers posting strong results in the North of 53 Championship Time Trials.
Mr and Mrs Edward Mor visited Edward's parents in The Pas with Ward Tom men and Jay. Edward, in the Navy, sailed a boat down the Mackenzie River from Yellowknife to Inuvik with 11 other Navy personnel, a journey about 1200 miles long over roughly a month. They attended the fortieth anniversary of Aunt and Uncle Mr and Mrs H Pocock.
The Pas Forestry Complex, in receivership since January 1971 for a 92.4 million loan default, will be transferred to Crown control as Manitoba Forestry Resources Ltd. The new crown corporation will include Woodlands, Lumber, Pulp and Paper, and Corporate divisions with October 1 1973 set as the transfer date. The move involves Churchill Forest Industries River Sawmills MP Industrial Mills and James Bertram and Son Ltd. as part of the complex's assets.
Warren S Eadie earns a Bachelor of Law from the University of Manitoba on May 24 1978 after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1970 and a Bachelor of Education in October 1972. Born in Flin Flon he is married to Ester Trager and is articling with Newman McLean Winnipeg. Manitoba Forestry Resources Ltd aims to grow for employees and The Pas area.
Health minister Rene E Toupin approved 220 425 in interim maintenance grants for 20 established day care programs to support a proposed province wide day care plan pending federal provincial agreements. Grants cover centers including Willow Centre Preschool, Campus Day Care at University of Manitoba, North Winnipeg Community Action Centre, St Laurant Preschool and several others with a one time operating grant to St Johns Community Centre Tiny Tots. About 25 people attended the Halliday family reunion in The Pas from August 3 to August 6. Attendees included Otto and Katie Hankey Sardis BC Wayne Thompson Kamloops BC Gordon and Violet West and others from The Pas Flin Flon and Kamloops. Activities featured a Friday supper a Saturday salmon barbecue a Sunday family dinner at George and Julie Halliday’s home and a wrap at Clearwater Lake with Mr Glen Haggerty and son Bradley arriving Monday to join the gathering.
Northern Affairs Minister Ron McBryde announced tenders on seven winter highway projects in northern Manitoba to supply freight to remote communities. Roads span from Highway 6 to Norway House about 65 miles to Ilford toward York Landing and Split Lake about 40 miles, Jenpeg to Cross Lake 15 miles, The Pas to Moose Lake and Crossing Bay Corner to Crossing Bay logging site about 10 miles, Ilford to Oxford House and Gods Narrows about 160 miles, Berens River to Poplar River about 60 miles, and South Bay on Southern Indian Lake to South Indian Lake. Submissions due September 5. provincial government will fund costs and aims to award in fall for winter-start work.
Thompson Manitoba celebrates the Greenhouse Project first crop of tomatoes. Two tons produced for Thompson’s Super Markets with support from city Nelson Road building Manitoba Research Council University of Manitoba cash grants and International Nickel aid. Project aims to test local greenhouse economics while serving as an information center for gardeners and involving the Thompson Horticultural Society.
