Public school classes began on September 4 in the Kelsey School Division with a record enrollment of 3082 students. The division cites a 9 percent rise versus prior year, contrasting with many divisions facing declines. A 1972 to 1973 comparison shows enrollments and projections closely aligned, so no staggered classes or use of the old system are needed.
Agriculture Minister Sam Askiw announced Eric McCormick as the Northern 4-H and Youth Specialist. The appointment follows two years of joint planning by the Departments of Agriculture Northern Affairs and Mines Resources and Environmental Management for a northern youth development program focusing on communities north of 53 lacking organized programs.
The Marigold Centre at Opasquia School opened on September 4 marking the first day of school for four preschoolers. Operated since October 72, it reflects the Pas Branch effort of The Association for the Mentally Retarded with Mrs. Doris Jellison as teacher.
Councillor Ed Sawula served notice to introduce a motion to rescind the decision to place a new public library at the MBCI school grounds. He proposes a public referendum to choose between the MBCI site and the Red Brick site, announced at last week’s council meeting.
Three people were hospitalized after a police chase on No. 10 Highway north of The Pas. Speeds allegedly reached 100 mph before a 1966 Chevrolet flipped, its engine and transmission torn from the chassis. In hospital Monday were Lawrence McKay and Gordon Ross of Flin Flon. Raymond Scott of Wanless had been released. The crash occurred September 5 at about 10 p.m. Ross faces a dangerous driving charge.
Public superintendent Norman Baxter reports the blacktop program is moving ahead of schedule with seven steps to completion on 6.9 miles of streets. Borger Bros. concentrates on streets needing all seven steps, including Cathedral and Settee sections and a Rossbet block.
Dr William Fouad was elected president of the Overture Concert Association for 1973-74. He led the season’s first meeting on September 4. Officers include Secretary Allene Johnson Membership Bear Betts Publicity Kay McLaughlin. Returning executives are Audrey Bachelor Mary Williamson and Strvie Reddy. The season opens with Feux Follets around November 8.
The Pas town promotes an Industrial Park of 60 acres in the southeast, seeking buyers while undecided on land prices. After three years of planning, council secured access over Indian Band land and obtained extra funds from DREE, previously a $190000 loan reduced to $107000 with additional terms.
Mrs. Roland Crawley filed a claim against The Town over plumbing fees for a sewer line issue. Council debated the charges but did not resolve the dispute in this portion of the report. CONTINUED ON PAGE 12.
The Pas and Kelsey School Division will be early tenants of The Pas Industrial Park with a municipal garage project. Council hired Gabouray Lussier and Sigurdson to design the garage, marking a second engagement for the St Boniface firm on town garage projects.
The Pas Lumber Company held an Old timer's Reunion at Norlite Hall bringing together 135 former employees and their wives. The firm operated from 1919 to 1958 producing 120 million board feet of white spruce lumber and employing up to 300, with 35 houses on First Street. Attendees recalled the S.S. David N. Winton and winter logging crews, while honorees included Mel Williamson and Tom Paquette Sr. among others.
