Ted Smith, president of The Pas Track and Trail Club, presents a $56 cheque to Sandra Gardiner, president of The Association for the Mentally Retarded, The Pas Branch. Funds from Clearwater Lake Bathtub Races were fully allocated to aid the children after poor turnout.
The Canadian National Railway non operating employees remain on strike since August 2. Strike leader Hubert Libbrecht says no decision will occur until Thursday when Parliament is recalled to hear an offer likely rejected by workers. The rotating strike has become general, disrupting fuel supplies and gas stations in The Pas. Libbrecht calls for a fair offer before any settlement and possible call back to work.
The Pas receives a $192,000 storm sewer contract under the Special Area agreement. McNicol Construction Limited of Winnipeg will install sewers in The Pas Annex subdivision and the Indian reserve trailer court, addressing area flooding. The project proceeds under Manitoba Northern Affairs and federal Regional Economic Expansion oversight.
The Pas residents collected about 760 large green bags of cans paper glass and trash in a single cleanup on August 22 spearheaded by Bob Freeman and Bill cKay of the Department of Mines and Natural Resources. The effort continued with Chamber of Commerce and three summer grants Halcrow Lake Cleanup Assistance to Senior Citizens and the Purple Palace supported by The Town with bags trucks and $200 prize money while store owners and townspeople donated drinks and food for workers.
The HERALD moves news and ad deadlines for Labor Day week. News must reach the office by 4 p.m. Friday August 31st and ads by 10 a.m. Tuesday September 4th. Friday submissions are welcome. Distribution may be delayed to Thursday August 6th due to the holiday.
Schools in the Kelsey School Division will open Tuesday September 4. Classes begin at 9 a.m. The Herald corrects an earlier report and notes class lists for all registered students appear in this week's paper on pages 10 to 12.
The 4th Annual Championship races start at 1:30 p.m. with heat one and time trials at 1:00 p.m. in The Pas this weekend. The event offers $1500 in prize money with cars from Flin Flon Thompson Cranberry and more expected. A demolition derby follows on Monday September 3rd to complete the weekend.
Several members of the Pasquia Art Association received an opportunity to submit paintings for a display at the Winnipeg Planetarium lobby in the Centennial Centre Complex. The invitation highlights regional artistic collaboration and exposure for local artists.
The Pas Indian Band and The Pas town council signed a new timberland trailer court agreement ending a dispute over occupancy fees. The rate drops to 12 dollars per trailer for 1973, with one dollar for garbage pickup and another as a straight reduction. The band will handle garbage pickup and a special allowance per occupied trailer applies for the agreement duration. Access to the industrial park remains in place.
Due to a critical nursing shortage, St. Anthony’s General Hospital will perform emergency operations in its Operating Room while elective surgeries are canceled until further notice. A 25 bed Extended Care Ward is closed, and staff recruitment has failed to restore full strength.
Witness reports a silent, round silver object at about 1500 to 2000 feet altitude moving from southeast to northwest near KCC. It glowed white then blue green as clouds shifted, revealed four underside lights, and vanished behind clouds after about ten minutes.

The Pas and District Horticultural Society held its 1973 show on August 22 at Guy Hall. Eric Batchelor won the Grand Aggregate Trophy and several class prizes including Cut Flowers, best gladiolus, and best dahlia. Other winners included Mary Goretski Bowls, R. O. Schlick, Brother Henri Dancose, Mrs. Zaworonok, and Tom Rigby among many. A junior competition saw Jay Tellier win, with Janne Tellier and Rudra Dharamraj and Joanne Portice taking other prizes. A new third house competition went to Cheryl Goretski. Home grounds and vegetable garden judges also named top entries.
