The Atikameg Cottage Owners Association representing 300 cottage owners at Clearwater Lake was inaugurated last Thursday night at the Friendship Centre. President Jack Berg, Vice-President Jean Flatman, and Secretary-Treasurer Derek Betts lead a slate with three two-person committees from Mile 15, Mile 17 and Mile 25. The group aims to hold at least two meetings yearly to hear member concerns and guide the organization.

Trappers Festival Set for February 13 to 16, 1974

Situation Improves At St. Anthony's Hospital
The nursing shortage at St. Anthony's Hospital has eased with twelve new nurses hired since September. This marks a 60 percent improvement from June when shortages were acute. Director of Nursing Mrs. Giles says ten more nurses are still needed. Eight of the new hires are immigrants from the Philippines whose training matches Canadian standards, allowing Manitoba registration with little difficulty. The arrival had been delayed by immigration regulations since November.

Day Care Centre Lowers Fees Based on Government Help

Man Dies In Hit and Run Near Carrot River Road
Charles Buckberger 66 of 453 Lathlin Avenue died after a hit and run last Friday three miles west of Town on Carrot River Road. The car that struck him fled the scene and was not named by RCMP pending further investigation. the driver turned themselves in the following morning.

Castor Oil Plant A Prize Winning Thompson Exhibit
The Ingebrigsten family at 96 Greenway Crescent Thompson share details of their castor oil bean plant. Planted end of May the plant reached 6 feet with 10 to 12 inch leaves in 14 weeks. They won the 1973 Home & Garden Contest judged in August. Toni and Bert Ingebrigsten, with daughter Geralyn, have lived in Thompson twelve years. Bert works at the Thompson Mine.

Obstruction Charge Dismissed in Court Case

Judge Drops Assault Charge After Accident Verdict
A Pine River woman Frances Bilanchuk had assault charges dropped in court after testimony suggested the incident with Blanche Young of The Pas may have been accidental. Witness Fred Lafontaine testified the glass of water slipped and hit Young during a dispute over a long distance call at about four in the morning. The judge stated Lafontaine was the only independent witness and it may have been an accident.

Car Goes Up In Smoke In The Pas Gravel Pit
A car owned by Bruce Hoskins of 751 Settee Avenue The Pas burned in a gravel pit five miles north of Town on Tuesday October 9 during a mud rescue attempt. The fire, which broke out while the driver tried to turn around, burned out on its own. Police report no further injuries.

Three Months for Forgery Charge in Lynn Lake
Zacheus Dumont faced three months in jail after pleading guilty to forgery and attempting to cash a forged document in Lynn Lake. On May 20 he tried to cash a forged paper, and on May 31 he offered a $90 cheque to Benoit but received $10 back, claiming the cheque was for $9. He denied taking the money as he was already serving time on an assault charge and the additional term completed the sentence for these offenses.
