Malicious actors shot insulators off a power pole at the sewage lagoon in The Pas causing a ten minute outage and a fire that burned the pole top. A shotgun hole and destroyed door light were found on the lagoon building. Hydro says power remained out in the area for hours.
Mitchell Dowhaniuk retired from the C N R after forty eight years in The Pas yards. Ted Mikolayenko presented his last pay check while General Supervisor Larry Hurrell recognized his service and gave a reclining chair as a memento.
The HERALD reports ongoing anger over missing drapes in the Council Chambers. Councillor Shirley Jonas says the project remains delayed since last May while Gabouray Lussier and Sigurdson are cited as saying the drapes are en route amid broader civic construction and maintenance issues.
A would be looter was captured by local RCMP at 5 am on October 2 after entering Hones Sporting Goods on Fischer Avenue. Entry was made by breaking the front window. The operator hid in the basement. the suspect’s hands were bleeding. He faces break and enter with intent charges and was to appear in court on October 9.
Voters in The Pas will go to the polls October 24 to elect eight School Board Trustees. This is the first vote since 1967 after years of acclamations due to low interest and few candidates. Seven people seek seats in The Pas ward including one incumbent and five newcomers, with Bill Russick withdrawing from the race.
The council discussed a proposed referendum on locating a new library site and rescinding two property acquisition resolutions at the M.B.C.I. site from the Kelsey School Division. Only three members spoke, with Mayor Kennedy defending the Municipal Act and opposing the referendum.
The Pas Council voted to develop a Community Club on land at Cathedral and Dufferin Streets in the southeast. Councillor Ed Sawula vacated during discussion due to ownership of the land. The Tenants Association of Kelsey Estates will sponsor a major share of the centre, with access for all area residents.
Commonwealth Construction wins stay against transferring assets of Churchill Forest Industries and River Sawmills to a Crown Corporation Manitoba Forestry Resources Ltd. The order by Mrs Justice R J Matas delays fund transfer as Commonwealth appeals to the Manitoba Court while liens totaling several millions are contested before Judge Lorne Ferg in County Court.
A community drive in The Pas seeks a grand piano to support the school band Girls and Ladies Choirs and local festivals. A committee led by Dr. William Fouad includes Ben Betts Teresa Pidskalny and others asking for broad support from organizations and individuals to acquire the instrument for shared use.
Salvation Army sponsors a Spiritual Encounter this Sunday October 14 with three sessions at 1030 AM 230 PM and 700 PM at the Legion Hall open to the public Major John Ham provincial leader in Manitoba will be the speaker. Major Hamm is described as dynamic intelligent and inspirational with talks on spiritual experiences and a Q A on life. The evening Gospel meeting invites all community members to attend.
The Delicious Bakery debuts on Ross Avenue offering fresh bread buns pies and turnovers. Owner Henry Hurshka backed by Jim Terry plans 25 staff and 350 loaves per half hour with hours 9 am to 9 pm daily. Tours available for schools churches and clubs with group discounts.
Cottage owners from Clearwater Lake gather at 8 PM to launch a new association. A nominating committee, formed two weeks ago after 60 owners attended, will report. An executive of nine will be elected and by laws, a name, and review of organizational meeting points are expected.
