Manitoba returns to standard time on Sunday October 28 as clocks move back from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m. under the Official Time Act of 1967, ending six months of uniform daylight saving across the province.
The Town plans a year round indoor track and field facility. Council approved applying for a 1973 grant of twenty thousand dollars from Manitoba’s Department of Tourism Recreation and Cultural Affairs to fund an underground complex under Scott Bateman Junior High School.
A juvenile was charged in a car theft case dated Thursday October 18 at 2 10 AM. The thief was followed and captured by the car owner and two helpers before RCMP was notified. The vehicle owned by Terry Miller of The Pas was stolen from behind The Cumberland Block on Edwards Avenue.
Trustee Russick criticized a September 11 1973 letter from Chairman J P Johnson on behalf of the Kelsey School Board to the Pas Council about the Red Brick School Site for the new Library. He noted copies were not sent to all board members and was unable to obtain a copy until after the October 1 meeting.
The Kelsey School Board discussed allowing a The Pas Correctional Institute inmate to attend classes at MBCI. Harold Grundy cited a 17-year-old Thompson youth on day parole for arson, while Trustee Claude McClelland argued the inmate deserves chances like others. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16.
Woodacres subdivision approves basic building rules for new houses on 74 lots. Minimum foundation areas are 1,000 square feet for one-story and 700 square feet for two-story homes, with a 10 percent variance available via the Planning Commission.
A weekend training drill by The Pas Fire Department used a simulated fire at Seventh Street West and Gordon Avenue to expand firemen knowledge. Organized by Winnipeg assistants H E Thiessen and J R Matheson, the exercise aimed to determine the best extinguishing method for future lifesaving emergencies. The building, the old C N R station, was demolished on Sunday.
The Harlem Clowns visit the M B C I gym November 1 at 8 P M for a lively performance. The troupe tours globally for 35 years blending fancy ball handling with planned and spontaneous humor to entertain sports fans.
W C McLean regional director for the Department of Mines Resources and Environmental Management asks Atikameg Cottage Owners Association president Jack Berg for an opinion on a proposed dam to regulate Clearwater Lake water levels. The Water Control Branch has done a preliminary site study at the Clearwater Lake outflow to Cormorant Lake and would design a structure and estimate costs before a decision and recommendation are made.
The MBCI site was released to The Town of The Pas for a new library location by a 3 to 1 board vote prompted by a letter from Town Manager Walt Lengerke. Trustees discussed expropriation and potential land transfer to Bancroft via the board solicitor.
Elliot Harry Budinikis of Cormorant was fined 1000 for unlawfully breaking and entering Cormorant School and causing 61 cans of paint glue and alcohol to be spread inside. He received 18 months probation and a payment plan starting with 500 immediately and 100 monthly, with potential custody if the first payment is missed.
The Pas Minor Hockey Association seeks coaches as 353 youths ages 8 to 16 fill 33 weekly hours of ice time at the local arena. Five leagues WeePee Tom Thumb PeeWee Bantam and Midget contain 45 102 103 71 and 32 players respectively. permanent coaches are not yet assigned due to a coach shortage.
The Pas Trappers' Festival general meeting is called for Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. in the Festival Headquarters basement of the Cambrian Hotel. A 1973 Festival financial report will be presented and a new executive, including Mr. Cudmore, may be elected amid calls for turnout to show support for the festival's continuation.
The Town will buy a high pressure portable steam boiler to thaw manholes culverts and pipes during winter. The boiler costs $3 707.55. Officials say the current equipment is old and spare parts are unavailable.
