The Pas voters who are Canadian citizens or British subjects, aged 21 plus, and residents since before April 22 1969 may vote for the mayor and three councillors for a two year term plus one councillor in the by election. Election day is October 22 with polls open 9 AM to 6 PM at Lite Hall and Elks Hall.
The Herald contacted six Town Council candidates and two mayoral candidates after nominations closed on October 22. Each was offered to publish up to three statements with deadlines three days apart. Only two of the eight candidates accepted to publish a statement in this week's issue.
A candidate urges five year planning for water and sewer, warns against day to day governance, and proposes closer council collaboration to implement changes. Edwards Avenue concerns cite loitering blocking store access, harming business, with police patrols proposed to curb the issue.
Stan Reid declares his intention to seek re election for a third term as Councillor for the Town of The Pas. He cites growth and his Chartered Accountant training in finance and management as assets for the town. He promises detailed discussion of his finance role in upcoming Herald issues.
The contract for sewer and water mains and roads in The Pas Annex has been let to Partick Pipelines Limited for 173000 dollars. Town Council authorized Underwood McLellan and Associates to supervise the project up to 6200 dollars.
With Halloween approaching, a stand of pumpkins including many over 20 pounds weighs on the plan for pies. The mother has other ideas and the fate of the oversized pumpkins has been decided.
Town council heatedly debated a land swap with the IR Corporation tied to the proposed Indian Band trailer court development. Indian representatives offered exchange land for four town lots, plus an option to buy at 600 dollars per lot. councilors argued over gravel use and the town’s tax base.
A total of 150 walkers have submitted 2000 dollars by Friday morning for a museum project. About 200 marchers still owe their contributions. Rotary Club sponsors urge timely payments via the schools Gateway Drugs or Art Johnson's Men's Wear. Scrolls list walker names and miles completed.
Six contenders filed for three council seats along with the mayoral bid as incumbent Audrey Batchelor Alex Wilchowy and Stan Reid joined Vern Bernstrom Cal Gibson and Ron Chalmers. Mayor Harry Trager will run with Stu Carey’s council term ending October 10. The Kelso School Division will not hold a trustees election with a new board elected by acclamation. Norbert Graveline Ward 3 Rahl's Island Wanless and Frank Parker were reelected. Margaret Effler and James H Sheane won two other seats. Effler, wife of Gulf Oil employee Barry Effler, expressed disappointment at acclamation. Sheane serves as a District Administrative Officer with the Department of Indian Affairs.
Construction of a new egg laying plant by Brett Young Seeds Ltd begins in the town. The cedar-colored structure on the east side will be a controlled environment cage layer poultry house measuring 208 by 43 feet. Chicks are to arrive by December 1 with egg production planned by early 1970 for the northern market. An additional two to three staff are expected.
Town Planning members criticized current handling of building permits and urged Town Council to enforce the Planning Act. The commission warned that without action the act becomes pointless and the Planning Commission powerless.
The Herald announces a holiday on Monday October 18th with offices closed. All advertising for the October issue must be in by 10 a.m. Tuesday October 1ath.

The Pas group held an executive meeting to finalize plans for the 1969 70 concert series. Special guest was George Zukerman executive director of the Overture Concert Association. He is pictured with a friend from a recent tip to Australia.
