Voters must be Canadian citizen or British subject, at least 21, reside in The Pas before April 22, 1969, and may vote for mayor and three councillors for a two year term plus one councillor in a by election. Election day is October 22 with polls 9 AM to 6 PM at Nor Lite Hall and Elks Hall.
The mayor recalls 1959 when 450 homes lacked sewer and water and notes the town now has full water and sewer service funded by debentures with twenty year terms. He cites year by year sidewalk expansion and widespread paving, plus planned street lighting and storm sewers to address ongoing issues.
A public statement from Stu Care requests advance voting for The Pas town election on October 22. He notes he has sold all properties except his residence to remain unbiased and urges modernization of election practices to accommodate workers away on election day.
After eight years on the council Alex Wilchow announces he will run again for Councillor. He pledges Monday dedication to duties and cites ongoing work on traffic signal lights and other achievements.
Stan Reid discusses the rapid expansion of The Pas forestry complex into the 1970s and its broad effects on town life. He notes looming challenges and urges proactive measures to ensure prosperity for residents and the town.
Cal Gibson marks a decade as a trustee for The Pas Manitoba’s Kelsey School Division No 45. He notes rapid growth in students staff and facilities and praises the division for efficient operation within provincial budgets. He credits teamwork over individual credit.
The candidate proclaims no promises beyond serving to best ability. He cites six years of Town experience 1963 to 1968 including Police and Fire Chairman and Finance Chairman Deputy Mayor roles. Since 1969 he has served on the Town Planning Commission and notes arrival in 1943 from a Saskatchewan town and marriage in Our Town.
MBCI hosts the world famous Harlem Stars basketball team Monday. Advertised as the greatest and funniest basketball troupe in the country the Stars tour the world to entertain fans. Pictured is Sweet Sam Smith a six foot eight inch 210 pound star who has taken his physical for the armed forces.
Two more candidates joined the civic election ballot Jack Kennedy and Orville Gareau filed nomination papers bringing total candidates to ten The papers had to be submitted to Town Hall offices by 2 PM Friday Continued on page 13
The Pas faces budget cuts as federal spending for a new air terminal is slashed. Plans by the Department of Transport for a 1970 start and an estimated 450000 dollar terminal, intended to double facilities, are postponed four to five years. Airport manager Bill Scales notes passenger volume rose about 33 percent over three years.
About 100 walkers joined the Rotary Club event to fund a new museum. Collections tally shows $3,500 raised so far, with roughly 20 percent of participants yet to submit their contributions.
Dr. Stu Carey met with Manitoba Premier Schreyer in Winnipeg to discuss tax incentives for the The Pas forestry complex development. Carey’s private citizens brief outlined The Town’s economic future and major challenges, with a formal presentation to Howard Pawley and deputy minister McDonald planned.
Premier Ed Schreyer visited The Pas on Monday October 6 and toured the forestry complex north east of town. A TransAir charter brought 27 business executives from Europe, Canada and the United States for meetings arranged by Mr. McBryde. Dr Carey noted only Churchill Forest Industries has a tax incentive agreement. four other local firms have no agreements, suggesting The Pas could negotiate tax terms with them. River group firms were among those mentioned.
The 1969 MBCI graduating class is saluted by W C Thomas who urges duty to others as he speaks at Saturday night ceremonies. The program lists graduates Denise Garand Norma Ezepchuk Katherine Carpenter Louise Costello Anna Madesta Leslie Langlois Deana Arnold Linda Carnegie Eileen Herman Beverley Gibson and many others.
