The No. 303 Air Cadet Squadron announces a recruiting drive for both cadets and instructors. Boys aged 13 to 19 are eligible with enrollment open through December. Parade nights are Tuesdays at 7 30 p m at the Elks Hall. Qualified contact is Capt G Turner or Lieut C Nichols.

Councillor Russ Tawse reports the town looks into a proper tranquilizer gun for the dog catcher and an antidote for the drug. With a new veterinarian in town there is professional help if needed. Tawse says the town has a real dog problem and the job cannot be done “like a cave man with a stick and rope.”

A second photo shows freshies picking up cigarette butts as punishment for alleged wrongdoings. Gr. 9 newcomers dreaded initiation beginning Sept 26, with seniors selecting “slaves” on Sept 25.
The Pas gains two new RCMP officers on a summary relief basis after a council request aimed at easing weekend trouble in the downtown core. Police report several drunken in public charges and fighting charges tied to payday crowds, with officials stressing the added staff will help maintain order. Mayor Harry Trager notes improved policing and aims to eliminate the Edwards Avenue problem.
Local beer parlors have been blamed for disruptions in The Pas downtown during recent weeks. Town Council asks the Liquor Board to enforce rules with more inspections as excessive drinking is cited. Councillor Russ Tawse suggests hotels police their own service to curb street disturbances. Winnipeg officials noted the present inspections are ineffective as hotels anticipate them. Police have picked up as many as 20 drunks per night on weekends.
M L A Ron McBryde introduced a bill in the Manitoba Legislature to incorporate St. Anthony’s Hospital and authorize a 25 million dollar expansion. The measure would create a new corporation to take over the hospital’s assets from the religious order Les Soeurs de la Charite de lHospital General Saint Antoine de le Pas.
The Pas Ministerial Association conducts a church affiliation census in October. Local citizens are asked to cooperate with the survey.
Five cases of dynamite were stolen from a cache about three miles north of Town. Thieves broke into the storage area over the weekend and took four cases of 40 percent dynamite and one case of high explosive 75 percent. An RCMP spokesman suggested the explosives may be en route to Quebec, noting similar thefts in the north where dynamite was mailed to Quebec by French workers.
Councillor Audrey Batchelar reports after a Winnipeg meeting with the Attorney General and deputy ministers. The province will provide four extra RCMP officers at no cost until policing needs level off. A separate RCMP discussion in Winnipeg addressed renewing RCMP services after the June contract expires. The town rents police facilities for 100 dollars annually under a 10 year lease ending June 1970, with assurances of assistance for a new establishment and capital expenditure planning.
The Pas hosts the Canadian National Institute for the Blind canvas event run by the Lions Club from September 28 to October 5. Members will wear official ID badges as donations rise. a scholarship of about $1,000 was raised last year, continuing a three year trend of high per capita support.
Susan Greenleaf, 19, of Umperville Settlement, was fatally struck by a semi-trailer while walking along the Prospector highway. The truck was driven by L E Hrabarchuk of Kenville Manitoba. a preliminary hearing was set to open Monday and an inquest is expected later.
Vern Bernstrom and Ron Chalmers announce bids for two year council terms as four council seats and a one year term open. Incumbents Reid Batchelor Wilchowy undecided while Carey and Trager seek mayor and chief magistrate posts. School board races include Graveline Parker Stephens Gibson undecided.
