Robin Wiens appeared on nine charges over three court days last week. He pled guilty to three, was found not guilty on three, and one case was dismissed. A crown stay halted a charge of impaired driving while other charges were resolved with fines totaling 139 dollars.
Pickets organized by Native Economic Exploration and Development NEED were called off at 1 PM at the junction of 10 Highway and the complex site. The action, already planned with 10 AM to 12 Noon and 2 PM to 4 PM shifts, involved 11 demonstrators including five from The Pas and the rest from Winnipeg. The end came when David Courchene of the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood said NEED must meet with CFI.
NEED, Native Economic Exploration and Development, distributed a pamphlet in The Pas saying its actions will help Indian Metis and White people. On September 21 NEED posted demands at the forest complex site calling for quotas of Indian Metis workers. Liberal M L A Gordon Johnston of Portage la Prairie charges The Pas New Start program has become an NDP political tool. He cites advisor Wilf Hudson and consultant Ron McBryde as NDP connections and notes concerns from The Pas residents about staff salaries.
Tuesday morning a fire of undetermined origin completely destroyed Lorne Buckle’s The Pas garage and nearby structures. The blaze began about 2 00 am and died when volunteer firefighters arrived at 2 15 am with no local water supply. Buckle valued losses at about 100000 with a diesel truck and school bus also lost along with a house trailer and nearby home. Continued on page 14.

Next week’s delivery is expected 2 to 3 hours later. The paper marks its ninth year of operation with a current weekly run of 3350 copies, up from 1200 nine years ago.
The Pas Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a grass fire behind Bill Campbell's home at 460 Taylor Avenue on Sunday about 4 30 PM. Assistant chief Bert Hayes limited burning on private land citing town by laws requiring landowners to manage grass. Fire, burning near a propane tank, consumed grass before crews arrived. About 15 firefighters were deployed and estimated costs to taxpayers around 225 dollars.
Captain Hugh C. Fischer, whose mother lives at The Pas, is assigned to Canada's best CF-101 All Weather Fighter Interceptor Squadron. The unit will compete against U S Air Force in the 1970 William Tell Interceptor Meet at Tyndall Air Florida. The 409 Squadron at CFB Comox will fly the 1200 mph Voodoo guiding targets by a Canadian ground radar team. ADC heads Canadian NORAD with North Bay Ontario as headquarters and the 22nd NORAD Region as the largest defense force for North America.
A single car crash at 2:00 a.m. Friday seriously injures the driver and sends four passengers to hospital. Melvin Garland, 20, of Dauphin is in serious condition at St. Anthony’s Hospital. His wrecked 1965 Chrysler burned after rolling at least three times near Suicide Curve on No. 10 Highway, south of The Pas. Passengers Lyall Lucas, 21, Swan River. Lary Lycar, 19, Camp Morton. Brent Granger, 23, Virden. and Gladys Fink, The Pas, were also injured.
Mr Jack Wark, project manager for Bertram Sales Ltd., announced Churchill Forest Industries Limited’s pulp mill at The Pas produced its first trial batch on Monday October 6. The Technopulp engineers praised the pulp quality and said only minor adjustments were needed. Further tests will continue until the mill operates smoothly.
