Walk-a-thon Planned by The Pas Recreation Department

The Pas Recreation Department organizes a June 10 walk starting 9 a.m. at the Reserve soccer field to Prospector and back, a 20 mile route with check points and refreshments. Five trophies will be awarded for youngest, oldest, top fundraiser, and first to finish with separate awards for men and women. Proceeds fund Reserve recreation facilities including Opasquia Indian Days. Angus McLear joins as new recreation director. Gerry Ferguson will publish related notes in The Herald.

Town moves to clear shacks with 35 low cost homes

The Pas Town Council outlined a plan to build 35 single family low cost housing units by year end. Manitoba Housing and related bodies will supply 30 to 40 thousand dollars for land purchases if land is available. DREE adds 14 thousand for demolishing condemned buildings near potential sites. The town will use land reserve funds to acquire and condemn properties then sell them to Manitoba Housing, returning money to the reserve.

Pollution control facility opens at Churchill Forest Industries

A 135 foot diameter effluent clarifier at Churchill Forest Industries The Pas Manitoba begins operation this month. It will treat main effluent streams to a set consistency while solid materials are hauled for land application. The system will improve the remaining effluent quality discharged into the river and support smaller projects to prevent overflow spills and regulate mill processing to reduce waste.

Indian Reserve Ward Contested for Kelsey School Division

The Pas Indian Band Council requests The Pas Indian Reserve join Kelsey School Division No. 45 as a ward. A Board of Reference hearing will be held May 31 at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in The Pas to hear parties on the request under The Public Schools Act.

The Pas passes a new traffic by law after five drafts over 12 years since the last major revision. Councillor Jim Fasano, transportation chair, notes review of mow removal derelict vehicles street safety and large trucks parking. Councillor Doug McBride reports land between the C F I apartments on Dufferin Avenue may be reserved for a playground serving The Pas Annex. The finance committee notes C F I paid a 20 percent deposit before occupancy but no further action has been taken by the company.

Alaska dog team may join Trappers' Festival next year

A letter to Trappers' Festival chairman Wilf Cudmore says a dog team from Anchorage, Alaska may participate in the next festival. The Department of Tourism Recreation and Cultures Affairs notified him of the possibility. A Manitoba Trade Mission visited Alaska in April.

Stanfield to Visit The Pas on Friday Evening

Progressive Conservative leader Robert Stanfield plans a brief stop in The Pas arriving from Yorkton at five and leaving for Flin Flon after 2.5 hours. He will meet Mayor Jack Kennedy and Jim Doucette at the Shopping Plaza at 6 25 and visit The Band Office at 5 30 before public events and a 10 minute welcome.

Bird Sanctuary For Halcrow Lake Hope in The Pas

Mrs. Gerry Yarema states citizens backing a local committee can restore Halcrow Lake and attract birds. Two meetings drew strong interest but need broader support. Mary Duncan School faces contract dispute over delayed construction

The Mary Duncan School project on Third Street risks delay as W W Construction of Winnipeg may be removed if it cannot resume by June 1. The Kelsey School Division seeks options with the Manitoba Public Schools Finance Board, including re-tendering to F W Sawatzky or using a town contractor, with completion now expected around October if work restarts.
