The Pas Kinsmen Club launches Easter Seals drive this week with canvassing April 1 2 in business areas and April 4 in residential districts. Proceeds aid crippled children. out of town subscribers may mail contributions to The Pas Kinsmen Easter Seal Committee.
Secretary of State told the Commons on Tuesday CBC must estimate the cost of extending television service to northern and remote areas. Miss LaMarsh replied to Churchill MP Robert Simpson who urged Parliament to fund the expansion for northern residents. CONTINUED ON PAGE 15.
The Salvation Army Youth Band, now a 35 member group led by Lieut. B. Hougesen, plans its first musical tour during the Easter holidays. They will perform in Swan River, Dauphin, and Brandon, representing The Pas as they travel and promote the gospel through music.
The Pas Vocational School plans full enrollment of 500 when it opens in September. Principal Stephen Didcote says the staff will total between 75 and 80, including teaching positions mostly still vacant. The Civil Service Board will interview candidates in The Pas rather than Winnipeg, with many applicants from The Pas and Flin Flon.
Len Komenda was elected president at a general meeting on Saturday evening. Ethel Bruderer became vice president with Claire Martin as secretary and Barbara Fisher as treasurer. Directors include Gus Lamontagne, Bill Martin, Jim Catteral, Earl Harvey, Otto Herman, Mrs. Tom Smith, Mary Polony from The Pas, plus Dick Dagg, Bill Ross of Birch River, Mike Chief, Duck Bay, and Aime Menard of Camperville. The retiring president Doug McBride received a desk set from Hon. Jack Carroll, and guest speaker Hon. Buck Wimey, Minister of Health.
The Associate Medical Clinic in The Pas reports 31 venereal disease cases this March, including syphilis and gonorrhea. January and February averaged 37 cases per month. Dr. H C Rolfe, Northern Health Services director, releases the figures covering the Northern area. Patients are asked to name those they were infected by and those they may have infected. G. F. Jonasson president of Keystone Fisheries Ltd argues that Keystone leads in exporting Manitoba jackfish to Europe. He predicts expanding overseas markets could turn The Pas fish sector into a major secondary industry as a new northern forestry complex develops. He notes potential employment for Indigenous people as woods work grows.
Doug Gourlay, agricultural representative of the Department of Agriculture at The Pas, is transferred to a similar post at Swan River and will begin April 1. The Gourlays have lived in The Pas five years. wife and family stay through the school term. Replacement for Gourlay not yet named.
The MBCI foursome Malcolm Green Carol Baker Dale Dunlop and Aaron Berg beat Steinbach 275 to 250 to reach the CBC Reach for The Top semi finals. They return to Winnipeg Thursday to face Gordon Bell to decide the flight winner.
On Monday at Clearwater Lake Airport Fred White spotted two crows, confirming the first real sign of spring. He described the birds as crows not ravens and noted the season is on the way.
A two year post high school mining technology course will start at Northern Vocational Centre in The Pas with a 3 million facility. The program aims to train graduates for surveyors draftsmen and other mining roles, with three instructors planned and capacity for about 40 students.
Doug White fans honored the popular right winger last Sunday afternoon. He is pictured with his family and Husky Executive Co members including Shorty Gamache Harry Friesen Arlee White and Bev Profit of the Husky Booster Club.
