The Avenue Hotel Break-in on St Patrick Day

Police estimate liquor worth about 1000 dollars was stolen in a St Patrick Day break in at The Avenue Hotel. Assistant Manager Mike Kowch reported the Thursday morning incident. Access appears to have been through a back loading door. Four or five cases of beer, one case of wine, eight 26 ounce bottles of Scotch, two cases of light rum, two cases of dark rum, one case of vodka, and six partially filled rye cases were taken. RCMP are investigating. no arrests yet.

Inmates May Help Town With Wine Bottle Pickups

Protective Services Committee Chairman Mardene Premachuk told Council on March 17 that she said inmates may assist the town with collecting wine bottles.

Inmates work proposal discussed for local correction institute

Lt Governor urged by committee to ask Mr Neil Joyce about using inmates for special work projects at the correction institute including cleaning bottles used by wine drinkers. Councillor Premachuk said Joyce was receptive and open to weekly or monthly service if requested. Transportation Committee to determine timing numbers and supervision including whether guards are needed.

Water rates kept steady by town council despite petition

Councillor Selk announced at the March 17 council meeting that water rates will not be cut and an increase may come in six months. Residents petitioned with 840 signatures asking to raise the minimum usage to 6 000 gallons while keeping the price at $21.13. The Transportation Committee will consult the Public Utilities Board and consider two methods for preferential rates before proposing changes.

Pas Town Council Defends 24 Hours Program Content

Mayor McBride reports Cecil Smith MP urges CBC officials to visit The Pas and show the program to local groups. Smith doubts an on air apology would help. Council will reply refusing to meet John Harvard or CBC officials and reaffirms call for a CRTC content inquiry.

Cain resigns recreation post at Kelsey Recreation Commission

Councillor Mardene Premachuk announced at the March 17 meeting that Dave Cain has resigned as Director of Recreation. His effective date is April 9 1976 when he starts as a Recreation Specialist with the Department of Tourism Recreation and Cultural Affairs Manitoba. The council will review the post with a policy decision forthcoming.

Glen Gallagher, Doris Gallagher, Ken Gallagher and Ken Fidler win Wescana Trophy in CN Spiel 1 at The Pas defeating Winand, Gunvaldson, Shawaga and Libbrecht to reach a dramatic final against Struve. Saskowski rink takes CN Spiel 2 after edging Hooper in extras. See CN Spiel Page 4.
