Indian Band eyes own school system over dropouts

About 70 members of The Pas Indian Band met at the Reserve Community Hall to discuss education. Chief Gordon Lathlin cited a 42 percent dropout rate this term, mainly at the high school level, and urged consideration of a band controlled system on the reserve. He questioned integration's effectiveness and favored incorporating Indian history with textbooks from New Start and Manitoba Indian Brotherhood. The group asked if they should stay in the present town system and whether a band trustee should join the Kelsey School Board, or push for a reserve school system.
