Integration of Reserve Students Into Local Public Schools
The Indian Affairs Branch has arranged for all Reserve grade children to attend local public schools this fall at no cost to taxpayers. Eight new classrooms will be built for the public system, with part of the Collegiate Auditorium funded. Big Eddy seeks a per pupil grant to cover teaching costs but not capital costs, and bus transport funding. If money is not raised, Big Eddy pupils may attend school there with local trustees needing to find teachers and financing. Some Indians from leased land report ongoing frustration with no progress. Young's Point students have joined local schools since the Kelsey School Division began, but revenue to schools remains unresolved, the province bearing responsibility per board. The Pas Reserve School closes as integration takes effect. The issue was discussed in Winnipeg in April.
