Swan River 4H Club Dominates Parade Prizes

The Pas 4H Club impressed at the Swan River Pair and Rodeo last week with multiple awards. Twenty two members helped win the plaque for best marching and dress in the 4H Parade, the third time in five years. RCMP Constables Denstedt and Galbraith assisted with practice. Lorraine Sudchuk and Barbara Smith were named 4H Queen and two Princesses, each receiving silver spoons. Janice Lee won in Sewing Parade. Elaine Zilke earned a silver spoon for sports outfit and led a team with Marybelle Bruderer in make over clothing. Shelly Neel and Phyllis Strand are noted.

Airport Contract Awarded for The Pas Airport Project

The Department of Transport awarded Ti chman Construction Co. Ltd. of Winnipeg a $706,267.50 contract for The Pas Airport at Clearwater Lake. The work covers Runway 12 30 reconstruction taxi ways aircraft parking apron paving the access road and runway and taxiway lighting. Completion is estimated for January 31 1965. TransAir has canceled Viscount service to the airport this summer due to runway deterioration. a DC 3 service remains.

Charge Laid After Ackland Break-in

Joseph Richard Carriere appeared in local police court charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit an indictable offense in connection with the Ackland Automotive Wholesale Store break-in last Thursday evening. He also faces charges of entering a dwelling and obstructing, remanded without plea for one week. Police report said the office safe was tipped and broken into with bars and chisel, entry likely through a coal chute, about $91 in silver missing from the safe.

Manitoba Review Set To Aid Indians

A crash program study of the Indian and Metis situation in Manitoba has been ordered by Premier Duff Roblin. The review will cover all programs, consider policies elsewhere, and suggest ways to integrate natives economically and socially. The study, conducted by economists with outside experts, is to be completed by September and presented to a federal provincial conference in October.

Town council grants 15 percent indemnity to injured worker

The Town Council approved paying Albert Lafontaine 15 percent of his weekly earnings while he is off work after a trench cave-in at the Third and Ross intersection. He also receives 70 coverage from workmen's compensation for pelvic and foot injuries. Engineer Adam Sus cited standard council practice. The meeting also set Saturday August 25 for a Little League tag day.

Two Clergymen Leave The Pas

Two members of the royal Protestant clergy depart The Pas in the middle of next month. Rev K L Martin who organized and developed the Apostolic Church on Lafose Avenue is transferred to Naniajo B C. His successor is not yet confirmed. David Braun joins the Mennonite Mission and leaves to resume studies at Bethel College in the United States. Mr Graun expects his successor to be named shortly.

School Board Declares No Admission for Non Revenue Students

The Kelsey School Board has decided that non revenue bearing students will not be admitted to local public schools this fall. About 35 to 45 pupils from Big Eddy Settlement and six from Young's Point face no schooling, with up to ten more from Indian owned band land. The board sought government fees to cover education costs and met with officials in Winnipeg but received no final financial agreement. The Big Eddy treaty status and local trusteeship are noted, with continuation promised on page 6.

Swan River Lawyer Named Chairman Conciliation Board

Mr John Walker, a Swan River lawyer, will chair a three member conciliation board formed by the labor minister to mediate a new collective bargaining agreement between The Pas and its employees. Ben Profit represents The Pas and Joan Perdue represents the union. The board plans its first meeting in The Pas in early August. The union seeks a 5 percent retroactive wage increase. The Town offers 5 percent in 1965 and 6 percent the next year, plus a three year contract and job classification. The union rejects a one year contract and calls for clearer job classification plans.

Local Assessment Boosts Town Revenue by 414000

The Town of The Pas hired private assessor services after Manitoba municipal affairs could not provide staff. Ken Perry and private assessors uncovered 414000.06 in additional property assessments including new buildings and remodels. With a 72 mill levy, the extra assessment yields nearly 30000 dollars for the current year and a full year in 1965.

Boating Clinic Promotes Safe Use Across Manitoba Resorts

The Safe Boating Clinic in its sixth year offers personalized instruction in watercraft use and life saving techniques. In cooperation with Labatt's and community groups, clinics run July and August at resort areas across Manitoba. The Pas Kinsmen Club sponsors the Clearwater Lake session on August 5. To date about 30 000 people have received training and last year was one of the province’s worst water accident years.

New Assessments Planned for Farm Districts

The Pas Herald reports imminent assessments for Opas quai and Rahls Island farming districts. Government assessors aim to schedule both areas soon, with increased cultivated land since the last appraisal. The Kelsey School Board advocates the assessment to boost district revenue and reflect recent boundary extensions affecting local students. Taxes would be retroactive to January 1.
