The Pas council adopted a resolution calling for traffic lights at Fischer Avenue and Third Street due to rising congestion. Councillor Alex Wilchowy introduced the measure, noting Fischer as part of 10 Highway is provincially funded and should bear the cost.
A fifteen member delegation urged council to shift Centennial funding from a park to a library. Dr. Robert Walton said a library meets urgent needs as the present library in the Community Building is inadequate and expanding. He cited The Pas as surrounded by lakes and parkland and noted a library vote as in Thompson. The group suggested October municipal elections for a library decision.
The Godin's Bakery Building on Patrick is slated for conversion into an eight unit apartment block. The plan, tied to rezoning the site, awaits Town Planning Commission action after a letter from the owners. Mayor Trager urged restoring the commission quorum to proceed, noting housing needs in The Pas.
The Union Supply Co marks its 50th anniversary of operations in The As. Founded by Moses Shklov, it began at Second and Edwards with groceries hardware and men's clothing. It moved to Third and Edwards in 1927 as Carrot River opened up, aiding farmers and fur traders. Harry Shklov, the present owner, took over in 1939 after his father’s death.
Water levels are high in Northern Manitoba with the Grass River causing issues along its course and reports from Clearwater Lake, Cormorant, the Nelson River and others. Authorities say steps are being taken to ease problems but normal drainage cannot handle the current volume of water.
The Town of The Pas street paving program began July 7 amid heavy rain that washed away most of the oil spread. Town engineer Adam Sus estimates about 1500 dollars of oil wasted on the first day, with Bignell Settee Scott Stewart Haight and portions of Cathedral and Lathlin streets affected. He hopes enough oil remains to curb dust for summer, though total oiling was budgeted at 5000 dollars and about one third could be washed out.
Work began last week on the remodelling of the Bike Block at the corner of Edwards and Second. The main offices have been leased to the Bank of Montreal and occupancy is expected by mid August. Exterior and interior renovations include extensive changes.
Churchill MP Bud Simpson calls the federal white paper on broadcasting inadequate for northern Manitoba arguing it covers only short wave radio and lacks any commitment to extended television service. He notes Manitoba and northern TV groups pressed for five year CBC funding and urges a firm government response when the issue is debated.
Fire Chief Tom Earley accused town regulators of lax enforcement at a council meeting filing four reports. He cites gasoline storage in private garages beyond five gallons and issues with moving permits building permits and burning of refuse. A June 28 blaze on Patrick Avenue involved a 25 gallon gas can and an open pail of gasoline.
REG D MILLER of Lorraine Apartments The Pas attends the International convention of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers in an auditorium here June 27. Miller is a CN locomotive engineer and BLE Division 680 local chairman and legislative representative. The Quadrennial event marks BLEs 58th in 103 years with about 40 000 members.
The Pas Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion plans a children’s picnic on Sunday August 7 at Devon Park near the swimming pool. Council approves using the east side picnic area after discussion of proposed sites and Lions Club cooperation. Welfare payments for June total 25100 chargeable to the Province 18900 to Flin Flon and The Pas share 13000.
The Pas council named Tin Podbisky weed inspector for July to September at 25 dollars a month to tackle overgrown weeds on town boulevards and private lots, with duties not to conflict with his regular town work. Councillor Alex Wilchowy raised complaints about private lot weeds at the meeting.
Three MBCI students take part in Canada's Centennial Student Exchange Program. Judy McCammon daughter of R C McCammon Dennis MacMillan son of Ford MacMillan and Judy Melnyk daughter of Bert Melnyk travel to Sydney Nova Scotia Montreal and Fredericton New Brunswick then spend four days touring host cities and three days with host families before a Ottawa Parliament Buildings stopover.
