No Paving This Year In The Pas Says Council
At a recent council meeting Finance Committee chair Jim Fasano said no streets would be paved this year in The Pas with paving by Borger Industries Limited of Winnipeg slated to start August 1. Work includes digging muskeg, storm sewers, curbs, sidewalks and lighting ahead of asphalt. First streets: Settee Avenue to Lathlin Avenue, Cathedral Avenue to Lathlin, Lathlin to Third, Gordon Avenue on one side, then Fischer Avenue by September 15. Phase II to follow.

Final Election Results in The Pas Constituency
Ron McBryde of the NDP defeats George Takashima of the Ind by 3,695 to 1,871 after hospital ballots counted. McBryde receives 69 votes to Takashima's 18 with 11 ballots spoiled, final totals confirm the result.

The town council, minus two absent members, chose the site for a new public library with a 120 by 120 foot parcel near Kelsey School Division land. From Klondike To Mardi Gras World Record Canoe Trip
Five Edmonton men Len Anderson Rick Kemp John Blair Gus Somerville and Mike ODonnell launch a 6400 mile canoe voyage from Edmonton to New Orleans aiming to surpass the 1936 New York Nome record. They depart May 23 from Rocky Mountain House with stops and a February 15 New Orleans arrival planned.

Commission Proposes New Trailer Park Near Grace Lake Road
At a Town Council meeting last week Ross Fielding of The Pas and District Advisory Planning Commission urged adding a mobile home park on Wilf Willow estates lands south of Grace Lake Road east of the recreation area and Centennial Park. He said the two current parks are full and one is problematic. The plan would improve policing and capacity.

Fasano Resigns from Town Council After Long Service
Jim Fasano resigns from the Town Council effective July 9 after serving since November 1971 and acting as finance chair. He also represented the council on The Pas Library Board as plans for a new library move forward. He told the mayor in March of his intent to depart to allow library and budget work to proceed.

Former Chief Dies at 75 in The Pas Reserve
Cornelius Bignell of The Pas Indian Reserve died Sunday morning at 75. He led the reserve as Chief from 1945 to 1965, re-elected nine times, and helped drive independence through several organizations. The Bignell Bridge on the Saskatchewan River bears his name. He co founded the Manitoba Indian Brotherhood in 1946 and served as its first Vice-President. Earlier roles included Band Council member for ten years, stern wheeler pilot, prospector, surveyor, and claims staker. Later he worked with the Game branch, as a commercial fisherman, and for the Department of Highways for ten years.

One Injured In Fischer Avenue Accident
A young man is in hospital after a motorcycle collision on Fischer Avenue in The Pas early Saturday morning. Albert Robinson of The Pas drove a 1966 Mercury half ton east on Fifth Street about 2:00 a.m. July 7 and struck Raymond Edwards who rode a motorcycle on Fischer Avenue, Edwards sustaining a broken leg.
