The by election to fill the council vacancy created by Jim Fasano's resignation will be held Wednesday August 15 with nominations due by Tuesday July 24. Fasano served since January 1972 and chaired the Finance Committee. the winner will complete the term through November 1974.
Eric McCormick resigned after eighteen months as Recreation Director for The Pas. He will join the Manitoba Civil Service Commission as Northern 4-H and Youth Specialist, effective August 10. He cited personal career advancement and praised the Kelsey Recreation Commission and Town Council for support.
The Pas Rodeo and Exhibition earns recognition in Saskatchewan and Manitoba for top local horses. Rodeo chairman John Bodnar credits local horse quality and recent purchases for the improved status. The area fields chariots and chuckwagons in events across southern and western Manitoba and Saskatchewan, with local entries in Gymkhana events, returning for The Pas event.
Vince Hasker of The Pas attended the Canadian Foundation on Alcohol and Drug Dependancies meeting at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown. He argued social attitudes hinder recognizing alcoholism as a disease and promoted a detoxification centre with strong family involvement. The conference covered treatment rehabilitation education and research with topics including youth drinking prescription drug abuse occupational alcoholism and drinking and driving. In upcoming columns Hasker will detail these topics.
The Pas hosts a 24 hour swim-a-thon starting 10 p.m. Friday July 20 and ending 10 p.m. Saturday July 21 at the new pool. Sponsored by the TPSCRA and Kelsey Recreation Commission, it invites swimmers and lap counters to contact Winton Pool office or B Campbell at 623-3057.
The Pas sees a surge in residential construction with up to June 30 31 building permits issued for one family homes and duplexes, far surpassing last year's total of 17. Jacobson and Grenier of Brandon plan twenty homes at Hogan and Settee while Winnipeg area inquiries indicate most vacant lots will be developed this year. An additional 30 permits are expected in the next two to three months as commercial and industrial starts continue.
The Pas Indian Band and Town of The Pas met to discuss a timberland trailer court deal. Chief Gordon Lathlin says no agreement exists yet for the park access right of way and demands a fairer new trailer park accord with Indian Affairs input.
Adrian Carriere, 53, is in intensive care at St Anthony's Hospital after a serious beating Thursday morning. Police were alerted by Peter Dunlop at 2 20 a m. Dunlop said he found a man badly beaten around the head in an alley between the Royal Bank and MacLeods on Edwards Avenue.
Orson Bestland was fined 500 dollars and court costs, with a one year license suspension, in Provincial Judges Court on Monday after Judge W. R. Martin accepted evidence from Fred Harvey linking Bestland to a fatal March 29, 1973 collision on Carrot River Road. Crown Attorney T. M. Singh urged a substantial fine due to injuries and death.
Patricia Lee Gibson 19 of The Pas is in hospital after a single vehicle crash on Provincial road 287 near The Pas airport. Police say gravel on the shoulder caused her car to lose control and overturn. The 1973 Dodge Colt sustained extensive damage worth about 2000 dollars. Gibson has back injuries and other undetermined injuries.
The Town of The Pas has been offered two adjoining lots on Fischer Avenue by Mr and Mrs Bruce Dunlop for a town library at their cost plus taxes. The 22 500 price covers the purchase of Premachuk and Dembinsky property located downtown between Carter's Sporting Goods and Evergreen Billiards opposite Gateway Drugs. The deal would run 30 days from July 12 in a letter to the Town Manager, noting the site’s downtown traffic and proximity to the post office and seniors facilities.
A 26-foot fiberglass canoe used by fur traders arrived at The Pas as six Minnesota high school students their photographer and guide begin a 5500 mile voyage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. The educational across country trip includes students aged 16 to 19.
