The Pas school board previews 1976 budget projection
The Kelsey Division School Board presented its 1976 projected budget at the February 17 meeting, sending it to the Public Schools Finance Board for review. Finance Chairman Jack Johnson called the plan very good and noted the district is near break even as costs rise. The budget shows a 5.12 percent overall cost increase, with $220,643 more in total costs. Revenues include a $465,000 reduction from Manitoba Government funds due to shifting The Pas Band students, offset by a $261,000 rise in municipal funding split between The Pas Town and the L.G.D. of Consul. Last year the Town paid 88 percent of municipal funding under the Special School tax levy.

Beard contest popular at beerfest

Miss Swan River Crowned Queen at 1976 Festival
The Swan River B P O El lis sponsors the 1976 Trappers Festival Queen. Seventeen year old Mary Ann Kowaluk was crowned after the final announcement on Saturday night. Finalists included Janice Chemereka Miss K C C Student Council and Gwen Hogue Miss Snow Lion with Kowaluk crying on stage. Janice Chemeieka named first princess and Gwen Hogue named second.

Mushers Debate World Championship Race Length at Banquet

Snowmobile race fatality at Trappers' Festival
John Beliveau of The Pas died from injuries after a snowmobile cross country race accident during the Trappers' Festival weekend. RCMP report he hit rough terrain and was thrown from his machine, then transported to St Anthony's General Hospital where he died about an hour later from internal injuries. Beliveau, born 1946, owned Beliveau Refrigeration and Electrical Co after moving from Churchill.

Town approves draft bus service agreement with Kelsey Bus Lines
Town of The Pas moves toward a six month experimental municipal bus service with Kelsey Bus Lines connecting Otineka Mall. The plan, costing the town little, covers stop establishment costs and snow removal, with a possible six month extension if performance is satisfactory. Fare structure ranges from three tickets for one dollar to 50 cent cash fare, free rides for seniors with ID, and 50 cent annual senior card fee. The route lists about 20 stops including downtown, Timberland Trailer Court, and Keewatin Community College.

Woman Killed in Two-Car Crash Near The Pas
A local woman, Jeanette Thompson aged 25 of Valley View Trailer Court, died in a head on collision on Highway 10 two miles south of The Pas at 7:00 p.m. Saturday February 21. Theodore Bignell of The Pas and Edith Snow of Birtel were hospitalized. Snow was later transferred to Winnipeg while Bignell remains in satisfactory condition.
