Bill Forster retires from Manitoba Telephone System
Bill Forster concludes a long career after joining the Manitoba Telephone System at The Pas in 1949. In 13 years in Systems Engineering he installed Northern Radio Telephone stations and led the Radio Terminal at The Pas before moving to the Plant Department in 1962. A Feb 6 dinner and dance honored his service with a recliner chair and a Humble P12 transistor receiver.

24th Annual Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival Opens in The Pas
The 24th Trappers Festival in The Pas runs February 17 to 20 with a fur show by Kolchin and Boxer. A welcome banquet kicks off the events and the 150 mile Championship Dog Races start Thursday morning with Chief Gordon Lathlin of The Pas Indian Reserve firing the flaming arrow. Races run Thursday to Saturday along the Saskatchewan River and conclude with awards. An ice palace will be built on the river shore near the race start.

Gas Co Granted Rate Increase
Steel Gas Utilities Ltd has been granted a 10 percent rate increase by the Public Utilities Board of Manitoba after seeking 15 percent. The hike applies to residential and commercial gas charges in Thompson, The Pas, Snow Lake and Churchill areas as represented before the board.

Trophies Donated To Museum By Emil St Goddard
Trophies won by the late Emil St Goddard have been donated to Sam Waller of the Little Northern Museum for display. Goddard, famed as the world’s greatest dog musher, won the 1929 World Championship Dog Races in blizzard conditions. Also donated was the mounted head of his lead dog Tody plus a showcase.

Six Juveniles Receive Probation In The Pas Break-ins
Six youths appeared before Judge Bill Martin in The Pas last Wednesday night facing seven break-ins three vandalism incidents and a bomb scare at Margaret Barbour Collegiate. Two were remanded while others got probation and no restitution was ordered. Merchants, including Henry Waller of Walter Jewellery, criticized the sentences saying probation fails to deter crime.

Suspended sentence for breaking downtown windows
Two brothers from Brochet Manitoba received a one year suspended sentence for breaking two shop windows valued at 300 dollars in Deters Confectionery and The Pas Meat Market. They were arrested January 20 after midnight by the RCMP and held in custody since. Magistrate Martin remanded them twice awaiting a pre sentence probation report.

Mayor Trager Proposes Citizen Crime Exploratory Committee
In a council report Mayor Trager urged forming a citizen's Exploratory Committee on Crime to study vandalism and rising crime. He proposed a diverse panel including labor business housewives ministers and council representatives to attend court proceedings and report back with reduction strategies. The group would examine RCMP probation services and seek guidance from the attorney general to address repeat offenders and juvenile arrests.

Fire Chief Receives New Station Wagon
Fire Chief Tom Earley stands beside a newly arrived station wagon, to be outfitted with a red roof light and possibly a two way radio if approved in the 1971 budget. The vehicle will be used by the fire chief and could serve as an ambulance in emergencies. The chief notes the addition of four new firefighters brings the department to 29.
